3/29/14 ¡ Looking for a JOB Looking for a job- unless you are the 1% of 1% no one is going to hand you a $1M job Identify the industry and potential employers Research who you are interviewing with (company and person) Know their competition Todays tools are readily available to you- Google, Annual Reports, Know industry history and trends- magazines, articles Be Prepared Prepare professional resume- with individualized cover letter- purpose of a resume? Tell what your strengths are and what is unique to you. What do you bring to the employer that is worth their while and better than others. What do you think employers want? Fill a hole in the organization- only they know the traits Self starter Quick learner Leadership and team player According to the Wall Street Journal- likeability Listen to and read about the greats and apply to you Reinvent yourself- new start Practice interviews- at home, with friends, or live ones- even if you don’t want the job 2 ¡
3/29/14 ¡ Get Connected Use your connections-Wayne Gretzky- take the shot Cannot be shy- no one will give you a job think outside of the norm NEVER burn a bridge Everyone is a potential lead to a job Neighbors and friends and their parents Classmates, teammates and roommates Schools- Professors, Alumni, Career services job fairs- in and out of Rutgers Professional organizations, networking events, Linked In (etc) Attributes in Job Process Be desired by businesses and potential employer Introduce yourself with a firm handshake and a smile- first impressions are important have a business card- Block RU, major and year, cell phone and email (normal) Use your education and how it applies to the company or your uniqueness Be observant in meetings- find a common “human” ground to talk Build a resume of work experiences (history of working), volunteering, internships, mentoring Be creative- always look for things in a different way Seek attributes of successful people Be a leader have a set of beliefs (not a poll follower) be optimistic and positive (who follows depressing people), have courage to take risks (but learn from them) always be prepared able to work as a team have the ability to communicate. 3 ¡
3/29/14 ¡ Sites Linked In Good looking resume- your foundation NICE picture of your self note business related events you joined, articles read, contacts made Give and get endorsements Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (and future ones) Have nothing that may deter a potential employer from hiring you don’t use your name if necessary What goes up on a site, stays up People will do research on you You are a GRADUATE You graduate and become financially secure- or retire Everything in between is stuff- get a job, have a family, buy a house, cars and lots of stuff you can spend wildly and work until you are 75, or retire early and enjoy life while you are young enough, healthy and have money Decide to make a career or career movement move up and make more money bounce from one employer to another with advancement and earnings as reasons Be passionate about what you are doing- not necessarily following your passion Continuous improvement every day Continual education- job related, industry- other things- green belt Make yourself unique/invaluable (closer) and/or well rounded (utility player) Be the best at what you do 4 ¡
