How do churches determine the true needs as opposed to simple desires and engage in vital mission outreach within the community?

The short answer is: EVERYONE! ◦ Large churches, small churches, new churches, churches who are struggling with attendance and outreach, and churches who are thriving ◦ This is a process we have created to use for any church to determine what and where they need to go with their next ministry or outreach ideas.

Discover • Look at your facility • Does your facility fit the needs of your community? • Before going out into the community, take a survey of interested persons within the church • Be sure to look at the spiritual gifts of those interested in service • Two types of data gathering: ◦ Qualitative ◦ Quantitative
Discover: Ground Rules of Your Committee • Include these Norms • Prevent/Limit these Norms ◦ If these norms exist, channel those ideas and behaviors to change via the preparation steps
Understanding Community Dynamics Physical and Natural structure Infrastructure Settlement patterns Commerce patterns Industry patterns Community demographics Community history Existing groups and institutions Economics Government and politics Social structure Attitudes, values, and cultures Formal community leaders Informal community leaders

Assess
Assess • Assess what your discovery process brought to light and determine how to implement • All assessment is perpetual work in progress, and therefore assessment should follow you every step of the way
Assess for who? • Think about the concerns of those unique populations in your congregation and/or mission and community o Under 35 years of age o Over 65 years of age o Infrequent attendees o Frequent attendees o Others?
Assess • Assessment should even include the volunteers o How are they responding? o What are their needs? Consider energy levels as well o Do they need additional support? Or do they have too many?
