Introduction Safety Camera Expansion 2020 903 new safety camera zones from 06:00 on Monday 17 th February • • A total of 1,322 safety camera zones nationwide • Safety cameras are proven life savers • All safety camera zones (high risk locations) available on Garda website • 575 safety camera zones have been removed following a review • • More than 1.5 m speeding tickets issued since introduction of safety cameras (AGS & GoSafe)
Introduction An Garda Síochána contracted a service provider “GoSafe” to operate safety cameras on their behalf GoSafe commenced operations in November 2010 GoSafe provide a minimum of 7,400 hours enforcement and a maximum of 100 hours of surveying per month Enforcement by GoSafe is only carried out on a stretch of road that has been identified as having a significant proportion of collisions whereby, in the opinion of the investigating Garda, a safe speed was exceeded. Enforcement sessions are conducted in line with the days and times of fatal and serious injury collisions
Summary of Results to Date GoSafe have completed over 800,000 hours of enforcement and checked over 248 million vehicles since launch (up to end January 2020) The number of vehicles detected by GoSafe in excess of the speed limit is on average < 1 person per hour (2019) More than 1.5m fixed charge notices for speeding offences have been issued in the same time (Garda and GoSafe) Compliance rates for 2019 are as follows:

Impact Irish road deaths have continued to fall to record lows since the introduction of GoSafe – 148 deaths in 2019.
Initial Speed Enforcement Zones When originally launched, there were 518 stretches of road selected as a speed enforcement zones for GoSafe Using more recent fatal and injury collision data from January 2016 to December 2018, a new review has been conducted The aim was to ensure enforcement continues to be in line with emerging collision trends and takes account of improved compliance New Zones launching February 2020
Updated Speed Enforcement Zones 575 zones were identified for removal 1,322 Zones Identified as having a collision history suitable for inclusion as a speed enforcement zones • 9.5% are on local roads, • 52.3% are on regional roads, • 28.8% are on national roads • 3.6% are on were motorways • 5.8% are on Unclassified Roads (Street Name, Road Name, Tertiary) Accounts for 4,427 km of road network – or 4.6% of the 96,000 km in the country 76% of fatalities, 66% of serious injuries and 44% of minor injuries occurred on this 4.6% of the road network These speed enforcement zones are effective from Monday 17 th February 2020
