  10. MY Y NRP SUPER ERVISOR VISOR  How can I obtain more information about my NRP Supervisor? Mr .

  11. MY Y NRP SUPER ERVISOR VISOR  Do remember that not all Supervisors are local / native to Singapore – many of our Professors are foreigners with some are new to Singapore.  What does this mean? o They may not understand our educational landscape; o They may not know what our school terms and hours are like; o They may not understand the demands and challenges school can pose; o You will have to communicate clearly and not take things for granted or assume that your Supervisor necessarily knows / understands the challenges / demands you might be facing in school.

  12. NTU TU OFFIC FICE E HOURS RS  Mondays to Thursdays: 8.30am to 5.45pm Fridays: 8.30am to 5.15pm Saturdays / Sundays & Public Holidays: Closed  DO NOT assume that your Supervisor will always be at his / her desk or in the office – he / she may be away at class, meetings or in the lab doing research.  Always make prior arrangements with your Supervisor before heading to NTU to meet with him / her.

  13. DOCU DO CUME MENT NTS S TO HA HAND ND MY SU MY SUPE PERVISOR VISOR  MOE School Calendar o The NTU Academic Calendar differs quite significantly from the MOE School Calendar. o Your vacation periods DO NOT MATCH those of your Supervisor’s. Period MOE School Vacation NTU Vacation May/June 1 Jun to 30 Jun 2019 13 May to 2 Aug 2019 September 7 Sept to 15 Sept 2019 30 Sept to 4 Oct 2019 23 Nov to 31 Dec 2019 9 Dec 2019 to 10 Jan 2020 November/December  DO NOT assume that your Supervisor will be in Singapore during the NTU Semestral vacation periods.

  14. DO DOCU CUME MENT NTS S TO HA HAND ND MY SU MY SUPE PERVISOR VISOR  School Timetable & CCA Days o You should give a copy of your School Timetable to your Supervisor. o You should also alert your Supervisor of your expected CCA days or any other days in the week you may have other commitments to attend to and therefore will not be able to head down to NTU to work on your NRP project.  Travel Time to NTU o You may also want to alert your Supervisor of the time it would take for you to travel from your home / school to NTU. o Distance must NEVER be an excuse for your unwillingness to head to NTU – you should have factored NTU’s location into your decision when you decided to accept our offer.

  15. DO DOCU CUME MENT NTS S TO HA HAND ND MY SU MY SUPE PERVISOR VISOR  School’s Event Calendar o You should inform your Supervisor of the dates / periods you will not be able to work on your project because of: ¤ Block / Common tests ¤ Promotional examinations ¤ Competitions ¤ Project work / oral presentation  Holiday / Home Leave Periods o It is also your responsibility to communicate clearly to your Supervisor the periods you expect to go on holiday, and also the dates of your home leave and the duration you expect to be away.

  16. DO DOCU CUME MENT NTS S TO HA HAND ND MY SU MY SUPE PERVISOR VISOR  Contact Details o Give your Supervisor your ¤ Home number ¤ Mobile number ¤ Preferred email address o Get from your Supervisor his/her ¤ Office address ¤ Office telephone number ¤ Mobile number (don’t insist, some Profs are not comfortable sharing this number with students) ¤ Email address

  17. CONT CO NTACTING CTING MY SU MY SUPE PERVISOR VISOR  Remember to tell your Supervisor the best time for him / her to contact you. Similarly, you should also find out from your Supervisor the best time for you to contact him / her as well as his / her preferred mode of communication.  Some Supervisors may ask one of their Graduate / PhD students or a Research Officer in their laboratory to mentor you – do check with your Supervisor. Find out who your immediate mentor will be and make sure that you have the contact details of this person.  ALWAYS copy your NRP Teacher Co-ordinator in all emails that you send to your Supervisor.

  18. DRAWING DR AWING UP UP A GANTT NTT CHAR ART  Draw up a Gantt chart to plan the timeline for working on your project as well as your project deliverables.  A Gantt chart is one of the most useful ways of showing activities / tasks / events displayed against time. o The vertical axis lists the activities / tasks you need to complete; the horizontal axis shows the time / duration needed for each activity. o Each activity is represented by a bar; the position and length of the bar reflects the start date, duration and end date of the activity. o This allows you to see at a glance: ¤ What the various activities are; ¤ When each activity begins and ends; ¤ How long each activity is scheduled to last; ¤ Where activities overlap with other activities, and by how much; ¤ The start and end date of the whole project.
