  1. Iowa City Community School District Climate Action Plan Eric Giddens, CEEE Energy Education & Outreach Coordinator Rebecca Aberle, UNI Public Administration Student Intern

  2. Key ingredients in our program • International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) Regional Affiliate Membership • ClearPath: http://icleiusa.org/clearpath/ • UNI Conservation Corps • Student Fellowships & Internships • Class Projects

  3. Climate Action Planning Process • Develop GHG Emissions Inventory for school district’s operations • Building & facilities energy use • Transportation fuel use (buses & gasoline powered vehicles) • Water use (& wastewater generation) • Solid waste generation • “Business -as- usual” Forecast • Planning • Set a reduction goal. Iowa City has adopted the following IPCC goals: • 45% below 2010 by 2030 • 100% below 2010 by 2050 • Model “reduction strategies” that will reduce emissions. • Monitoring – Future GHG inventories to measure progress

  4. Resources • US DOE Advanced Energy Retrofit Guide, Practical Ways to Improve Energy Performance – K-12 Schools : https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy14osti/60913.pdf • US EPA Energy Efficiency Programs in K-12 Schools, A Guide to Developing and Implementing Greenhouse Gas Reduction Programs : https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2015-08/documents/k- 12_guide.pdf • Green Iowa AmeriCorps Sustainable Schools Members could review these resources and help the district with EE project planning & implementation – Examples of potential EE/energy conservation projects: LED lighting, occupancy sensors, Energy Star computers & appliances, building envelope upgrades, advanced thermostat programming, smart power strips, natural lighting, adjustment to seasonal temperature variation 4
