Objectives • Identify local, state, and federal regulations, policy, and guidance on control and management of nitrates for groundwater protection • Identify BMPs and create database • Evaluate effectiveness of BMPs Policy and BMPs Regulations • Develop consensus based BMPs Effective- ness Consensus 7

Task 1: Regulatory Review • Approach: – Lower Yakima Valley Groundwater Quality Preliminary Assessment and Recommendation Document (Ecology 10-10-009), Table 3 (sources), water quality protection, permits, dairies, CAFOs, septic system, etc. – Technical Memorandum #1 • Obtain GWAC, agencies, and stakeholder input GWAC to select agency and stakeholder review 8

  9. Task 2: Develop BMP Database • Compile BMPs developed by local, state, and federal agencies (e.g. WDOE’s Irrigation Management Practices). Include information on effectiveness • Create database of BMPs: BMP type, description, references, effectiveness, use in GWMA, etc. • Database review by GWAC 9
