  4. PLASTIC AND OTHER LITTER IN THE ENVIRONMENT IS UNACCEPTABLE PLASTICS DELIVER SIGNIFICANT SOCIETAL BENEFITS, INCLUDING: • ENERGY, GREEN HOUSE GAS AND RESOURCE SAVINGS; AND, • INNOVATION THAT IMPROVES HEALTHCARE, REDUCES FOOD SPOILAGE AND IMPROVES QUALITY OF LIFE. TO RECEIVE THESE BENEFITS, PLASTICS MUST BE RECOVERED SO LITTER DOES NOT THREATEN NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS

  5. PLASTICS PACKAGING CAN HELP REDUCE FOOD WASTE SOURCE: PACKAGING IN PERSPECTIVE, ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON PACKAGING SUPPORTED BY INCPEN

  6. GLOBAL DECLARATION UNITED PLASTICS INDUSTRY ACTION • Announced at UN/NOAA Marine Debris Conference, March 2011 • 6 point strategy for industry action • Advocates close cooperation with range of stakeholders to create solutions • 65 associations from 34 countries • ~260 projects launched/on-going since 2011

  7. GLOBAL DECLARATION CONTENTS WORK AREAS: 1. Contribute solutions through partnerships to prevent marine debris; 2. Research to understand scope, origin, impacts; 3. Promote policy & enforcement of existing laws to prevent marine litter; 4. Spread knowledge of efficient waste management systems; 5. Enhance recycling and energy recovery opportunities; and, 6. Steward plastic pellets from supplier to customer.
