IED Awareness Training UNIT THREE IDENTIFY THE MOST COMMON PARTS OF AN IED What Makes a IED? • Power Source • Trigger • Detonator • Main Charge • Container (shrapnel) Power Sources Any source of power, strong enough to initiate the DETONATOR (blasting cap) • Can be internal/external to device • Commonly used batteries : C l d b tt i – Motorcycle batteries – Cell Phone batteries – Remote controlled toy batteries 8
IED Awareness Training Trigger’s Used to initiate the explosive train • Mechanical timers • Chemical timers • Remote control’s • Cell phone triggers • Passive infra red (PIR) sensors • Pressure plates 9
IED Awareness Training Detonator (blasting cap) A small explosive to initiate a more stable larger explosive (Electric / Pyrotechnic) • Military stock (foreign or domestic) • Commercially acquired • Can be homemade Main Charge/Explosive A component that uses chemical reactions to create a powerful outward pressure (shatter violently / burst apart) • Can be military stock (foreign or domestic) • Can be military stock (foreign or domestic) • Can be commercially acquired • Can be home made 10
IED Awareness Training Container / Shrapnel Container can be any holder to keep the separate parts in close proximity • Metal containers – Pipes p – Pressure cookers – Paint cans • Wood boxes • Plastic containers 11
IED Awareness Training Container / Shrapnel Shrapnel causes most significant penetration injuries during the detonation of the IED • Can be anything that is on hand y g – Bolts / Nuts – Stones – Ball bearings – Nails • Can be the container itself! IED Awareness Training Let's look at how these parts work together: The power source supplies electricity to the trigger and to the detonator. The trigger activates the detonator and initiates the explosion sequence initiates the explosion sequence. The detonator explodes, thereby providing energy for the main explosive. The main charge explodes, producing a high-pressure shock wave or blast wave, and may propel shrapnel. (BIG BANG) 13
