Hepatitis C • Hepatitis C vir us (HCV) is the most common chronic blood borne infection in the United States • Hepatitis C is a slow progressing disease, with symptoms that may not appear for year s. When left untreated, chronic Hepatitis C, can lead to liver damage and potentially even li ver cancer. • According to The New England Journal of Medicine, 1 in 6 inmates (or 17%) are infected. • The i ntroduction of Sovaldi in December, 2013 significantly changed treatment, but comes with a significant cost of $1,000 per pill per day • The cost to treat an inmate using Sovaldi is between $90,000 or $180,000, depending on patient genome type Rich, M D, MPH, J. , Alle n, MD , S ., & Williams. Hepatitis C • 31 inmates being evaluated for treatment • Inmates are evaluated on a case-by-case basis • Level of disease (grade/stage/prognosis) is used to help determine treatment • Length of sentence considered so inmate fully completes treatment and post-treatment follow-up 14
