We study every aspect of their daily lives including how they learn, how they eat, how they exercise, how they spend money, how they vacation, how they train for sports, and even how they dress. From this deep understanding of people, we strive to improve the overall quality of people’s lives so that they can learn more, live longer, lead more fulfilling lives, and thrive. Our ultimate goal is to help people expand their potential.

  2. This presentation is designed to provide you with more information about the College of Human Sciences . The topics listed on this slide will be covered in greater detail throughout this presentation. 2

  3. The College of Human Sciences is comprised of 5 undergraduate departments and 1 graduate department. The graduate department (not represented in this slide) is called Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS). 3

  4. Apparel Educational Studies & Hospitality Management (AESHM) is home to three majors. Apparel Merchandising, Design & Production (AMDP) has five primary options including Creative Design, Technical Design, Product Development, Merchandising, and Production/Sourcing Management. Event Management (EVENT) is a new major starting Spring 2011. Family & Consumer Sciences Education and Studies (FCEDS) has three options including Teacher Licensure, Communications, and Professional Studies. The final major offered by the department is Hospitality Management (HSP M). 4

  5. The Department of Curriculum & Instruction offers majors in Elementary Education (EL ED) and Early Childhood Education (ECE). Note in the upcoming slide that Early Childhood Education is also listed under the Department of Human Development and Family Studies because it is administered by two departments in the College of Human Sciences. 5

  6. The Department of Human Development and Family Studies includes the three majors. Students majoring in Child, Adult & Family Services (CHFS) choose from three primary options including Child Programs, Youth Programs and Family Programs. The department also offers majors in Family Finance, Housing & Policy (FFHP) and Early Childhood Education (ECE). ECE is jointly administered with the Department of Curriculum & Instruction. 6

  7. The Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) Department offers four majors including: Culinary Science (CS), Dietetics (DIET), Food Science (FS), and Nutritional Science (NS). 7

  8. The Department of Kinesiology (formerly called Health & Human Performance) has one major called Kinesiology and Health . Students in this major choose from one of six options including Athletic Training, Community & Public Health, Exercise Sciences, General Studies, Health/Fitness Management, and Physical Education Licensure. 8

  9. The Departments of Food Science & Human Nutrition and Kinesiology also offer a BS/MS program in Diet & Exercise . This five year program is jointly administered between these two departments. 9

  10. The College of Human Sciences offers 12 minors to students across Iowa State University.

  13. The College of Human Sciences Student Services Office is conveniently located in 131 MacKay Hall. A wide range of services are available to help students be successful and answer any questions that may arise. The following slides are designed to introduce you to the people and services available to assist with your transition to Iowa State. 13

Each of the six colleges has a Multicultural Liaison Officer whose position is designed to provide support and services to students of color at Iowa State by connecting them with resources that are designed to promote personal and academic success. In the College of Human Sciences, this position ( Diversity Coordinator ) is also designed to educate students on issues related to diversity in order to prepare them for an increasingly diverse workforce. Through educational programming and one-on- one meetings, the Diversity Coordinator serves an important role both within and outside of the classroom. 15 15
