Potential Cost Savings With More Compact Development • If US government agencies advocated for more compact development we could save 11% or $110 billion on road building over 25 years. • They would save 6% or $12.6 billion on water and sewer costs. • They would save about 3% or $4 billion on services From, Investing in a Better Future, by Tony Downs UDS
We’re attempting to build our way out of the crisis How Road and Bridge Improvements Save Lives • Approx. 42,000 people are killed on highways each year in the U. S., 3.5 million are injured • Cost about $200 billion in property damage each year • Highway crashes are the leading cause of death of people 6 to 28 years of age and are the cause of more permanent impairments than any other type of accident. • Statistics show that increased investment in road and bridge improvements save lives. Making road lanes and shoulders wider, adding medians and improving bridges are just a few of the improvements which have been shown to cut fatalities significantly. • Every $100 million invested in highway safety improvements will result in approximately 145 fewer traffic fatalities over a 10-year period (= $29.9 trillion required to eliminate 90% of the fatalities) Source: Road Information Program from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. .
Cost to operate a vehicle • 2 income workers making $9.00/hour = $37,440 per household income • Taxes of $7,488 reduce this to $29,952 • 1/3 of household budget for housing … brings this to $19,948 • Each car costs about $5,500 to operate or $11,000 That leaves $8,948 for food, clothing, entertainment etc. Or about $24.00 per day
The average American household is now going to spend About $1,800 in gas per vehicle per year That means you can now afford about $15,000 more in additional mortgage costs if you live closer to where you work. Build up your equity or send the money overseas
