High Efficiency Synthesis and Isolation of Heterocyclic Compounds from Miscanthus Presented by: Kalsi Sukhdev P .Eng.
Company Background DMT Bioproducts was founded by David Theissen u and David Pawlowski in 2014 to develop innovative bio-refining technology for furfural production David Theissen has over 40 years of agricultural u farming experience and own 500 acres of agricultural land in Elgin region David Pawlowski is a Senior Chemical Research u Scientist with over 30 years of Research and Development and product/process development experience In 2017, DMT hired a Master’s graduate research u associate and an experienced project manager to develop a 5,000 sq.ft. pilot scale plant in Port Burwell, ON
Furfural Industry Landscape Furfural is typically produced from corncob residues u and widely considered the most abundantly available furan, yet the current bio-refining technology is limited to maximum yield of 10% and high energy consumption production process. The global demand for furfural in 2018 was 350,000 u tonnes and expected to grow at compound annual growth rate of 4.5% for the next 5 years. Canada imported 450 tonnes of furfural in 2018 and u at present, there is no commercial furfural or furfural derivative manufacturer in Canada. DMT would be first Canadian furfural manufacturing u facility, which could gradually expand into a major renewable chemicals company, could be considered as a strategic fit to the Canada’s bioeconomy vision.
Research and Financial Support In 2017, DMT entered into research collaboration with u Lambton college’s BPRC to perform lab scale testing of innovative bio-refining technology to increase the yield rate up to 20% using low temperature technique to reduce the energy consumption Based on successful lab scale results, DMT planned to u develop a one tonne capacity pilot scale demonstration plant in Port Burwell, ON to validate the bio-refining process and further optimize the processing technique In 2018, DMT received financial assistance from Bio- u Industrial Canada (BIC) cluster funding to develop the pilot scale up plant and further our research work to develop other bio-chemicals i.e. furfural derivatives and bio-plastics.
Market Research and Pilot Plant Development In 2019, DMT collaborated with BioEnterprise Corp. and u Sarnia-Lambton Research park (Dr. Aung Oo) to perform market research for furfural and furfural derivatives. BIC financial assistance is critical in developing the Pilot u Scale up plant. Most of the installation of commissioning of equipment has been completed. At present, miscanthus pre-treatment and synthesis methods u are being optimized. BPRC advanced lab support is critical in this phase of the project. Pilot scale furfural production is scheduled for late 2020. u R&D and Bio-refining process development for furfural u derivatives and other bio-chemicals is scheduled for 2021- 2023.
