  10. Proposal for the Halifax Nursing Transition Initiative 10

  11. Purpose: To train and provide highly qualified Registered Nurses for Halifax Regional Medical Center 11

  12. Problem Statement: Halifax Regional Medical Center has a critical shortage of qualified Registered Nurses with a documented need of filling between 20 and 30 positions. This shortage has led to the need to provide a disproportionate amount of resources to address this matter. Attempts have been made to make early identification of HCC Nursing students to recruit them prior to graduating from the Nursing Program; however, this effort has fallen way short of expectations and has failed to address the problem. The normal nursing student progression alone cannot significantly address the shortage. As a result the hospital has had to rely on higher cost options like Travel Nurses to meet their need. 12

  13. Proposed Solution: To help address this critical Registered Nursing shortage I propose that the Halifax Regional Medical Center and Halifax Community College partner to create the Halifax Nursing Transition Initiative to help address this problem. Here is how the initiative would work: 10 to 20 Practical Nurses recruited • 12 month training program delivered • Scholarships made available for HRMC commitment • HCC PN Graduates eligible in Summer 2018 to enter ADN • Develop a shadowing program for prospective nursing students • 13
