Hampden Resurfacing Project Benefits of raised median • Leads to improved safety for pedestrians and motorists • Refuge islands allow pedestrians to cross one direction of traffic at a time • The FHWA and Transportation Research Board encourage raised medians to reduce car crashes, decrease delays for drivers and reduce vehicle speeds on roadways • Reduced vehicle speeds help to decrease the rate and severity of crashes
