  4. “It’s easy to stay stuck, to be stuck in poverty. Some people inherit money, but some people inherit poverty. To think outside of the scope of poverty is hard. So when you have a hand up — what Habitat offers — that hand up turns out to be a different kind of inheritance: hope.” Jose, who moved into his family’s habitat house when he was 15 4

  6. WHO ARE WE? People in your community and all over the world partner with Habitat to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. With our help, those homeowners achieve the independence they need to build a better life for themselves and their families.

  7. WHO ARE WE? • Habitat Trinidad-Tobago began in 1997 as an affiliate to Habitat International as a housing ministry • Non profit - NGO Founding principle: Every man, woman and child should have a decent and affordable place to live in dignity and safety.

  8. WHAT DO WE DO? SAFE - Houses are low-cost, but respect all standard health, environment and construction safety codes. DECENT – Habitat Trinidad-Tobago uses quality, locally-available material. Trained staff supervise all construction and train our volunteers. AFFORDABLE – Costs are contained by using volunteer labour, limiting house size, efficient building methods and no-profit financing.

  9. WHO DO WE SERVE? Families who often cannot get financial assistance for shelter from traditional institutions: • Earn $1,000 - $8,000 per month • Own land anywhere in Trinidad and Tobago or have legal permission to build on the proposed site • Families without land tenure can benefit from microfinancing and smaller shelter solutions • Mandatory sweat equity of 300 hours

  10. WHY DO WE HELP? A decent and affordable place to live can remove barriers to opportunity, success and health that might have been part of a family’s life for years, if not generations. By investing in the future of a family, we can directly influence improvements and empower change in their communities, schools and neighborhoods.
