GSM-R in general and its im plem entation on the Øresund Link Peter Carlsson Engineer GSM-R expert BANVERKET Operation Division
Structure of the presentation • Background to GSM-R • W hat’s GSM-R? Status of GSM-R in Sw eden • • The im plem entation of GSM-R on the Ø resund Link
Background to GSM-R • EU found in the beginning of the 9 0 ´ ies that there w ere a lot of technical and adm inistrative obstacles for the developm ent of the europen railw ay traffic • One area defined for im provem ent w as technical system s for Control Com m and. I n the m ean tim e UI C had started the specification of a new • railw ay radio system = > GSM-R • I n the high speed directive 9 6 / 4 8 / EC the im plem entation of ERTMS ( = ETCS + GSM-R) w as m andated by the EU.
Overall structure of standards
The nam es EI RENE and MORANE Tw o projects launched to create GSM-R EI RENE ( E uropean I ntegrated R ailway radio E nhanced NE twork ) - Was responsible for development of Functional and System Requirement Specifications - Financed by EU and UIC MORANE ( MO bile radio for RA ilway N etworks in E urope ) - Consortium of railways and suppliers - Financed by EU, UIC and the suppliers - Was responsible for the realisation of an EIRENE compliant prototype system
W hat’s GSM-R? A radio com m unication system tailor-m ade for the railw ays capable of both voice and data ( ETCS) GSM-R is based on the w ell know n and w ide spread GSM technology Railw ay requirem ents have added som e new features on top of the public GSM like: Group calls ( e.g. Railw ay em ergency call) • • Broadcast calls Use of priority • • Fast call set-up for Railw ay Em ergency Calls Functional num bering • • Location depending addressing
Structure of GSM-R Railway specific services as Functional Numbering and Location Dependent addressing. Separate frequency band. GSM-R network GSM phase 2+ with ASCI functions Public GSM phase 2 GSM- network

Status of GSM-R in Sw eden Fully operating GSM-R netw ork • • EI RENE com pliant plus GPRS • Approx 1 2 0 0 BTS covering 1 0 0 0 0 km of track are installed I nlandsbanan expected to be finalized 2 0 1 1 • • Rolling stock ow ners/ traffic operators are responsible for installation in the rolling stock
Project organisation • The im plem entation project, SI R ( S wedish I nternational R adio for Railways) now finalized • The internal business unit Banverket ICT ( I nformation and C ommunication T echnology) acts as operator of the network
