books, buildings, photos, clothing, and even entire cities change form as they age, and these changes attract admiration in art, popular and high culture, and design. So why doesn’t the web get the same treatment?

In the context of the web, “graceful degradation” refers to design that accounts for old and/or proble- matic browsers, and old web standards, thusly allowing those with out of date technologies to at least obtain full functionality from a site, if not beauty.

I’d like to explore the concept of graceful degradation as it applies to the aesthetics of the web, to create new ways for the old web to become more elegant, interesting, and functional
