A bit about Denmark • Smallest Scandinavian country, part of EU • Capitol city: Copenhagen • 6 million people • Surrounded by the sea • Second most cultivated country on Earth (over 60% of the country is agricultural land – however only 2 % of employment) • High consumption, and home to some evil corporations: Mærsk, Arla, Danish Crown
Global Aktion • Activist-based solidarity organization in Copenhagen, Denmark • 100 activists organized in different working groups (and a small staff) • Work with and support like-minded social movements and grassroot organizations in Europe and Africa (and the rest of the world) • Support people fighting for their collective political and socioeconomic rights • Political campaigns internationally and in our ” own backyard ” as well
History ry • Started in support of the fight to end apartheid in South Africa (name: the Sydafrika Komiteen) • After apartheid ended, supported people’s struggles across Southern and Eastern Africa (name: Afrika Kontakt) • Now: Realizing that the struggle and its roots are globalized, the solutions must be global too (name: Global Aktion)
What do we we work for? WE WANT TO SMASH OPPRESSIVE POWER STRUCTURES – CAPITALISM, PATRIARCHY, IMPERIALISM! We work with four overall topics: A fair trade system based on solidarity and justice (against neoliberal free trade regimes) Climate justice and food sovereignty Local ownership over natural resources (against ressource grabbing) Dismantle power and fight for real and active democracy and workers ’ rights Cross thematically: Intersectional feminism and anti-racism
