  2. Overall objective of GNWP • Improvement of hygiene and sanitary conditions in five selected urban MAs and establishment of best practice for urban WASH improvement – Contributing to improvements in health & economic development – Selected MAs : Cape Coast, KEEA, Ga Central, Ga South & Ga West

Expected outcomes • Improved sustainable access to and use of sanitation (including management of human excreta, liquid and solid waste) and adoption of hygienic practices , especially by the poorest and most vulnerable groups • Improved access to and use of safe, sustainable and affordable drinking water , especially by the poorest and most vulnerable groups • Improved management of water resources in the programme area • Enhanced capacities of MAs and other key actors on governance and management of water and sanitation • Increased private sector involvement and local entrepreneurship for sustainable financing of WASH sector • Conditions created for scaling up of sustainable urban WASH by other municipalities

GNWP – key features • WASH – but with a strong focus on sanitation Baseline data:40% access to improved sanitation 96% access to improved water supply Though 56% use sachets for drinking water! • Emphasis on sustainability of interventions Behavior change communication, capacity building Sustainable financing models GWW – amongst others! • Comprehensive approach – Environmental sanitation: including solid waste, liquid waste, drainage – Urban integrated water resources management

GNWP – institutional set-up • Lead Ministry MoLGRD • Oversight Committee: – Members - MLGRD (Chair), EKN (Vice Chair), MoFEP, MWRWH, LGSS – Observers – GWCL, Coniwas, DP WASH Lead, WB, EU [ & others depending on agenda] • Municipal/ Metropolitan Assemblies – Implementation level • Technical Assistance and Fin/ Admin Mngmnt support at all levels

GWW within GNWP & Sustainable Water Fund • GWW objectives directly from GNWP • GWW geo-graphic scope in line with GNWP – Slightly broader – Second call? • Projects to start in 2014 – Will be embedded in MA’s WASH Master Plans • Significant component of GNWP – First call € 15 million – Second call tentatively € 22 million • WASH challenges to be solved through synergy between NGOs/ knowledge institutes, private & public sector • ODA invested in PPPs => pro-poor focus remains • GWW = window under existing Sustainable Water Fund – Follows as much as possible SWF procedures and formats
