UN – Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries “ The Code, provides a necessary framework for national and international efforts to ensure sustainable exploitation of aquatic living resources in harmony with the environment ” • Article 7.6.6 “ When deciding on the use, conservation and management of fisheries resources, due recognition should be given, as appropriate, in accordance with national laws and regulations, to the traditional practices, needs and interests of indigenous people and local fishing communities which are highly dependent on fishery resources for their livelihood .” 19

Project 1 - Fisheries Development Plan • A path forward for fisheries in Qikiqtarjuaq • Through collaboration with Qikiqtarjuaq, DFO, SVS, and HTA. • Hired a part-time local Fisheries Coordinator • Funding – Community Readiness and Opportunities Program (CanNor) • Identify gaps • Identify needs

Project 2 -Northern Communities Fishery Checklist • Existing Fisheries Checklist has been adapted by DFO from UNFAO • Excellent tool for data collection • Used primarily as an interview with fisheries managers • Has excellent potential for use in Northern communities where DFO does not have good data collection methods • Needs to be adapted, made culturally relevant and include community input

Other Projects Project 5 - School Partnerships Project 3 - Exploratory • Local school is interested in having Fisheries curriculum activities that support the needs • Two projects led by DFO of data collection in the fishery. Scientist, Chris Lewis, Iqaluit • DFO Science involvement ensures good Office data. HTO ensures culturally relevant. School involvement ensures relevance to Nunavut’s curriculum goals. Project 4 -Translation • Translation of relevant Project 6 – Monitoring Commercial Char materials into Inuktitut • Continuous scientific monitoring of existing • Tools and support available Arctic char quotas by local community and HTO in collaboration with DFO from UNFAO • Development of standards for sampling, • Conceptual stage scientific fishery for all species of interest
