What it means to be a family member: Generous Church
Generous Church
Generous Church “The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed’ Proverbs 11:25 NLT “Give generously, for your gifts will return to you later. Divide your gifts among many, for in the days ahead you yourself may need much help.” Ecclesiastes 11:1-2 TLB
Generous Church “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” Matthew 6:21 NIV “To be generous and willing to share.” 1 Timothy 6:18b NIV Generous ‘Grace Giving’.
Generous Grace Giving is not … 1. Random and Irresponsible “ On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made .” 1 Corinthians 16:2 NIV
Generous Grace Giving is not … 2. Not Based on Feelings. 3. Not Usually less than the requirement of the Law. “ But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.” 1 Corinthians 15:10 NIV
Generous Grace Giving is not … 4. Not Giving God the Leftovers.
Generous Grace Giving is Based on… 1. God’s Example in Christ. “ For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9 NIV “ God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV
Generous Grace Giving is Based on… 2. The Concept of Stewardship. “ Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV
Generous Grace Giving is Based on… 3. Inner Motivation, not outward Compulsion. “For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. 5 And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will.” 2 Corinthians 8:3-5 NIV
Generous Grace Giving is Based on… 3. Inner Motivation, not outward Compulsion. “ Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7 NIV
Generous Grace Giving is Based on… 4. A new relationship with the Holy Spirit, not the old regulation of the Law. “ For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God” Romans 8:14 NLT “ But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.” Galatians 5:18 NIV
Generous Grace Giving is Based on… 4. A new relationship with the Holy Spirit, not the old regulation of the Law. “Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor .” Galatians 6:6 NLT “Therefore , as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” Galatians 6:10 NIV
Generous Grace Giving is Based on… 5. How much God has prospered you. “ Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny .” Mark 12:41-42 NIV
Generous Grace Giving is Based on… 5. How much God has prospered you. “Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything — all she had to live on." Mark 12:43-44 NIV
