GCHS- A Great Place To Learn College-level opportunities at GCHS 18 Advanced Placement Courses (2014) - 523 sophomores, juniors, and seniors enrolled in AP courses at GCHS  1179 AP exams were administered in May 2014  84% of students scored a 3 or higher 10 additional college-level courses  5 college level BUSINESS courses are offered through Adelphi University  5 college level WORLD LANGUAGE courses are offered through St. John’s University

GCHS- A Great Place To Learn SED College Prep Indicators Class of 2014  Graduation Rate 99%  % Earning Regents Diploma w/Advanced Designation 91%  % attending four year colleges 95% Class of 2015  127/312 (41%) Seniors are taking a World Language in their senior year. 14 students are taking two languages  196/312 (63%) Seniors are taking a science class in their senior year. 35 are taking multiple (2 or more) science classes  285/312 (91%) Seniors are taking a math class in their senior year. 65 students are taking multiple (2 or more) math classes

English Department, Mrs. Arnone  The Grade 9 program emphasizes the Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts/Literacy.  Students will study a progression of literature from The Odyssey to Shakespeare to Animal Farm to Lord of the Flies ; complete the components of the research paper writing process; act as self-starters and critical thinkers. There is an emphasis on writing supported by quarterly writing benchmarks and a fully staffed Writing Center.  Courses available : English Regents/Honors*, coupled with elective courses of study: Theater Arts I, Creative Writing, and (when needed) Reading for Meaning, as well as extracurricular writing for the Ink Spots literary magazine  * Honors policy applies

Garden City Athletics “A Tradition of Excellence”, Ms. Cerrone • 32 varsity sports and JV teams in most sports • Maintain a large number of students on teams • 9 time winner of NYS School of Distinction Award; All 32 varsity teams earned a 90 or better academic average • Nassau County Top 10 in Sportsmanship • Girls Field Hockey team won the LI Championship • Girls swim team won their 16 th consecutive Nassau County Championship • Several track athletes advanced to States • Several teams won Nassau County Championships

Differences between Middle School and High School Sports, Ms. Cerrone MS = 4 sports seasons for 9 weeks/HS = 3 sports seasons for 15 weeks • HS Fall sports ALWAYS begin in AUGUST (Exact dates will be set soon) • Student-Athletes MUST BE HERE all week for tryouts and practices in August. Please make your summer plans accordingly. • High level of commitment: practices and contests are held 6 days a week and during all school holidays • Conflicts? Students must begin to make choices with their time and interests • Free physicals for sports are offered at the Middle School for Girls on June 10 and Boys on June 11 at 3:30 p.m. • In addition: A Green Health History Form Must be brought on the first day of tryouts in August. • Cheerleading and kick line tryouts are in the Spring. Look for signs and listen for announcements
