Galerie m ’s selection of works this year is a symphony of opposites. The prelude is formed by a triplet of sculptures by Richard Serra, François Morellet and Lee Ufan. François Morellet’s large corner installation cercle à demi libéré n°1 from 2013 unfolds its dynamic weightlessness immediately adjacent to the precariously balanced, ponderous steel sculpture Spine (for Max Imdahl) , 1988, by Richard Serra. Together with Lee Ufan’s floor installation Relatum , 2000, these three pieces form a distinctive “frame” for the stand’s presentation concept. The shimmering translucency and light reflections in Mineral Logics, made by Peter Wegner out of the mineral muscovite, wall drawings by Evelina Cajacob , and the large-format painting Dialogue by Lee Ufan create pale and delicate counterpoints to the dusky closed surfaces of a Schwarze Zumalung by Arnulf Rainer , a rare find these days, and the oilstick drawing Tracks by Richard Serra , where the gaze becomes mired in the materiality of the color. In contrast, the Farbraumkörper (Color Space Body) by Gotthard Graubner seems to oscillate between expansion and compression. Supplementing the above-described sculptural ensemble is a spatial installation by Carla Guagliardi , Às Parcas e ao Edi . The exquisite fragility of this finely spun web, which manages to

This work in turn relates as antithesis to the floaty transparency of Morellet’s dancing “neon lines.” Questions of weight and balance are also raised by the painting from Antje Dorn’s new series Bauten (Buildings). These whimsical architectural fantasies contradict the logic of gravity and appear to be suspended in mid-air. Spatial structures and geometric surfaces are likewise themes taken up by François Perrodin and Jan Wawrzyniak . Each artist evinces his own reduced pictorial vocabulary, Perrodin applying it to a suspenseful play of mass and volume, and Wawrzyniak to toying with our perception of spatial perspectives. URBAN AND NATURAL LANDSCAPES The 32-part Buildings Made of Sky (exhibited at the Getty Museum, Los Angeles, from October 2013 to March 2014) by Peter Wegner depicts the cityscape from a bewildering vantage point, showing it to us in a way that upsets our usual viewing habits. New perspectives are also offered by Thomas Florschuetz’s recent series Enclosure (MiK), for which he photographed a model golf club built by Mies van der Rohe in Krefeld. The architectural elements structure the image while also in one case framing a view of the landscape with a tree at its center. A similar tree turns up as motif in the photograph by Simone Nieweg on display, as well as in the painting by Caroline von Grone . The works in this thematic complex are complemented by Lucinda Devlin’s Lake Pictures . Other photographic works are also featured. Aino Kannisto’s extreme perspective in Staircase Balustrade from the new series Hotel Bogota , as well as the disorienting spatial relations in Laura Letinsky’s work from the series Ill Form and Void Full resemble Peter Wegner’s Buildings Made of Sky in how they make us question what we are seeing. Evelyn Hofer’s photographs look quite classical in comparison with their sensitive and haunting portraits of people, as well as places and objects.
