UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH BHSU shares one of the only Underground Campuses in the world What does the BHSU Underground Campus mean for students? • Opportunities for students in South Dakota universities to share collaborative research • BHSU, in partnership with Sanford Lab, provides multidisciplinary research including physics, biology, geology/environmental physical science, education, and outreach • Hosted a Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP), bringing approximately 100 students majoring in physics and related disciplines from across the region Local high schools and elementary schools have learning opportunities at the BHSU Underground Campus 9

QUALITY EDUCATION BHSU-Rapid City (BHSU-RC) • BHSU-RC offers opportunity for Rapid City citizens to earn their Associate, Bachelor, or Master’s degree locally • BHSU-RC collaborates with the community and Ellsworth Air Force Base Colton Jacobs , a BHSU-RC business administration student from Rapid City, earned the BHSU- RC Director’s Award for Academic Achievement. STUDENT SUCCESS GEAR UP PROGRAM Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) • BHSU successfully redeveloped the statewide GEAR UP program • Last summer 69 high school students participated (53 completed the program) • Last summer 66 middle school students enrolled (39 students completed all five days) • So far in this academic school year, 4,955 students (1,370 in middle school and 3,585 in high school) were served in grades 6-12 from our partner schools • BHSU is currently recruiting students for 2017 13
STUDENT SUCCESS American Indians • Nearly 7.5 percent of BHSU students are American Indian, the largest percentage of the South Dakota state universities • The Center for American Indian Studies (Legislatively designated) provides educational, social, and cultural enrichment for American Indian students • The University offers academic degree programs in American Indian Studies: a bachelor’s degree, a minor, and has just submitted a proposal for a master’s degree 14

COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND SUSTAINABILITY Sustainability is a campus-wide effort; successful in creating efficiencies and savings Solar energy • Proposal to install solar panels on four campus buildings • Reduce energy costs Tree planting and tree identification programs • Pursuing Tree Campus USA status • Planted 599 trees in the past two years, doubling the number of trees lost in Storm Atlas Trash recycling • Recycled over 50 tons of material last year, diverting the equivalent of 33 compact cars from the landfill Wind Turbine • Generate 2200 kwh/year from the wind turbine, about 20% of what the average household uses in a year or enough energy to power four standard-size refrigerators LED lighting • Changing to LED lighting saves enough energy to power 39 households 19
