Meet Monique Riviere @winsomes_child Chief Program Officer, Byte Back, Washington, DC Monique oversees Byte Back’s programs, providing computer training, career services, and access to technology. Her very first computer, a Tandy TRS-80. She began to develop skills that led to unusual and fun summer jobs, a major in information systems from Howard University, and, ultimately, a career in information technology. Her goal is provide resources that clear the path for those who want to expand their economic opportunities through technology. www.byteback.org

  12. Refurbishing: Donation to Distribution 1. Donation 2. Secure Storage 3. Inventory Tracking 4. Assessment/Diagnosis 5. Upgrade/replace parts/load software 6. Distribute to Byte Back graduates or eligible customers 7. Warranty 8. Repairs If computers cannot be refurbished, they are recycled through a certified e-Steward organization, providing an additional service to the community. www.byteback.org

Refurbishing: Internships • IT internships – key component to the CompTIA A+ Certification Program o Invaluable experience of learning while working o Hands-on experience troubleshooting, testing, repair, performing hardware and software upgrades and installations o Using their new skills to give back to fellow students and community www.byteback.org

  14. Refurbishing: Challenges • Inventory management • Space to store donations • Unusable or outdated • equipment (mostly older desktops) • Logistics for donation pickup and drop-off • Expense www.byteback.org

Partnering for Internet • Partnerships with Comcast, EveryoneOn, and the DC Office of the Chief Technology Officer mean students who are awarded free computers can also get affordable and sometimes free broadband. • FCC reformed Lifeline phone service for low-income individuals to include broadband subsidy starting Dec 2016.
