Getting to Know Job Seekers Getting to know job seekers defines job search criteria. Good search criteria lead to better job matches. Our goal for the last month was to increase the amount of time spent getting to know job seekers in community settings. “ Knowing the true preferences and deeper aspirations was essential to increase the chances of identifying the best job match, thus maximizing job satisfaction, minimizing support after hire, and optimizing job retention. ” – Employment consultant P

Networking to Find Jobs and Tasks Share your ideas and stories!
Why is it important to network to find jobs and tasks? Only 20% of jobs are actually advertised — this means 80% of jobs are in “ the hidden job market, ” which is not accessible just by searching job postings Networking helps job seekers build up resources/currency known as “ social capital, ” which is important for finding out about job opportunities “ Ensure that everyone in the job seeker ’ s network knows about their job search. ” – CES, Lesson 1 For more information, see Lesson 1: The Hidden Job Market in the College of Employment Services online lessons
Networking Strategies

Monthly Goal As a group, increase the amount of time with personal and professional contacts to find job leads.
Building your goal What is something concrete that you can do right now to increase the amount of time you spend with personal and professional contacts to find job leads? How will you do this? When will you do this? Who will be included in this?
Building your goal Examples: Two days a week, I will stop by businesses I frequent on my way to work to speak with a manager or owner to build rapport that may help identify job leads. Once each week, I will talk to a job seeker and his or her family about businesses they frequent.
