June 2, 2009 WWW.AMERICASRELIEF.ORG Exploring Public/Private Partnership: Relief during Times of Peace and Disaster MIAMI, FL-May 28, 2009- Close to 100 government officials, corporations, and non-profit organizations gathered aboard the Carnival Cruise Ship Destiny at the Port of Miami for the Americas Relief Team’s Regional Crisis Relief Annual Luncheon. The event focused primarily on bridging the gaps between public and private sectors in order to Annual Luncheon. This topic is especially important as we approach the 2009 hurricane season in order to face the challenges and work together to reach our common goal. Sandra Grant Griffiths, Consul General for Jamaica, gave a detailed account of the damage assessed and strategic plans formed from past experiences, as well as needs faced and the importance of humanitarian help during times of disaster; Lieutenant Colonel Dustin Anne Shultz, USAR Joint Planner, U.S. Southern Command, discussed Public/Private Cooperation and how state and private sector involvement is essential in times natural disasters and human crises; and David Bernard, CBS 4 Chief Meteorologist shared i nsight on the upcoming hurricane season. Dr. Teo A. Babun, Jr., Executive Director of AmericasRelief Team presented Excellence in Leadership Awards to Seafreight Agencies, Inc. and Neighbors 4 Neighbors for their efforts in the 2008 Hurricane Relief Initiative. Introduction of officials representing the countries of: Jamaica, Haiti, Barbados, and Canada were made prior to a five course lunch, sponsored by Carnival Cruise Lines aboard the Destiny.
