AVTEC Mission is to… Expand employment opportunities by preparing Alaskans with career & technical skills required for success in the Alaska workplace.
Prepare Alaskans with career and technical skills… • Programs take students from zero employability and technical skills to entry level employee status; immersed daily in workplace simulation. • Job upgrade for incumbent workers aimed to increase upward mobility; customized training based on employer and employee needs. • Continuing Education to maintain employed status through job specific skills training to increase productivity; customized training.
Success in the workplace and life... • Occupational Advisory Committees comprised of employers meet regularly to conduct regular review of content, make presentations to students, employ students, and recruit students. • Interview skills, resume writing and life skills seminars are a part of the training program and prepares students for life after their training.

Training at AVTEC is different… • CLOCK HOURS NOT CREDIT HOURS: Students in class immersed in a workplace simulation for their chosen career field; over 1,000 hours of training in less than a year. • GRADED ON TECHNICAL AND EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS: Students demonstrate mastery of both technical and employability skills. • SUPPORTED UP TO ONE YEAR AFTER training is completed for job search and employment.

Alaska Maritime Training Center Youth Outreach / Pre-apprentice Licenses / Certifications The Young Mariner Preparation for Program (High School) Deck Able Seafarer Advanced License Introduction to Deck & Engine Advanced Maritime Navigational Skills Able Bodied Seaman, Officer Training Young Fisherman’s Mate and Master Marine Engineering program Qualified Member of the Company and Vessel Engine Department Specific Training Junior Engineer • 40 USCG and IMO Approved Courses including Ice Navigation and the most recent updates to the QMED Junior Engineer
Guided Pathway Model – Example Maritime Training Introduction to Nautical Employed, internship Skills is a high school apprenticeship with tug and course taught via distance technology or on-site in barge, tour boat, or other Able Seaman & home school district maritime employer Basic Training HIGH SCHOOL continues for COURSE/CREDIT students via Introduction to Nautical Skills distance delivery and at AVTEC Basic Training sponsored by Perkins Postsecondary grant for students and teacher professional development
Workforce Development • RELATED TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION: • Provided via distance technology for Registered Apprenticeships in Construction Maintenance and Allied Health topics. • CUSTOMIZED INDUSTRY FOCUSED TRAINING: • Specific, short term training in Seward or on-site based on the needs of employers, employees and workforce demand.
