  8. Advising and Registration • During the academic year, all students are assigned to a Fundamentals of Engineering faculty advisor. • Students are encouraged to see their advisor often, but are required to see them at least once per semester. • Advising meetings are a time for students to share academic, career, and personal goals with their advisor. • Registration is focused on adding courses to a student’s fall schedule. 13. Advising – Schedule Builder • Tool used by students to allow for easier scheduling and finding that “perfect” schedule BENJAMIN M. STATLER COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES

  14. Advising – Catalog and Plan of Study • Undergraduate Catalog – Your Academic Contract with WVU • http://catalog.wvu.edu/undergraduate/ • The catalog is also for important policies and information, including: • Academic Dishonesty • Probation & Suspension • Academic Calendar • FERPA • Appeals • Guidelines for Transient Courses (courses taken at other institutions) BENJAMIN M. STATLER COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES

  15. Advising – Graduation • What does it take to graduate on time? • Completing at least 124 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better. • Passing courses (not just completing, but passing with a grade of C- or better in many cases) • Summer courses (for “catch up” in some cases) • Building (and following) a Plan of Study with your advisor BENJAMIN M. STATLER COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES

  16. Advising – Financial Aid • Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) • Students must maintain the following for financial aid eligibility: • 2.0 (or higher) cumulative GPA • Completion of 67% of courses attempted • Obtain degree within 150% of the normal timeframe for degree completion • Academic records are reviewed at the end of each Spring term to determine if student is meeting the minimum academic progress standards. BENJAMIN M. STATLER COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES

  17. Academic Planning • Course Registration – The Typical First Semester • MATH (Level based on ACT/SAT/ALEKS) • ENGR (Will be based on MATH course) • CHEM (Will be based on MATH scores) • ENGL 101 • Additional Course Options • ECON 201 • GEF (General Education Foundations) BENJAMIN M. STATLER COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES

  18. General Education Foundations • General Education Foundations provides the opportunity for students to appreciate the context of their actions and choices beyond their major field(s) of study. • Students take between 31 and 37 credits, organized into eight categories BENJAMIN M. STATLER COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES

  19. General Education Foundations 1 - Composition and Rhetoric (3 or 6 credits) ENGL 101 & ENGL 102 -OR- ENGL 103 2 - Science & Technology (4-6 credits) CHEM 115 3 - Mathematics and Quantitative Skills (4 credits) MATH 154 -OR- MATH 155 Typical 4 - Society and Connections (3 credits) ECON 201 Engineering 5 - Human Inquiry & the Past (3 credits) ANY Major 6 - The Arts & Creativity (3 credits) ANY 7 - Global Studies & Diversity (3 credits) ANY 8 - Focus (9 credits) MATH 156, PHYS 111, ECON 202 BENJAMIN M. STATLER COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES

  20. The GEF and Minors • GEFs can be used to build toward a minor: Number of Courses Notes Number of Courses Left to Minor in GEF (Specific Courses Needed in Area) Completion Communication 3 - (5, 6, and 7) 2 COMM 104 (5); COMM 305 (6); COMM 316 (7) Studies HIST 101, 102, 108, 152, or 153 (5); HIST 179 or History 2 - (5 and 7) 3 180 (7) Philospohy 2 - (5 and 6) PHIL ### (5); PHIL 147 (6) 3 Religious Studies 2 - (5 and 7) RELG 303 or 304 (5); RELG 102, 301, or 302 (7) 3 BENJAMIN M. STATLER COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES

  21. Academic Integrity • Engineers are professionals with a responsibility to society • Students are expected to maintain high academic integrity in all situations • Academic Integrity is the responsibility of students, faculty, and staff • Academic dishonesty tarnishes ALL degrees from WVU and the Statler College • The Fundamentals of Engineering Program takes dishonesty very seriously Typically :  First offense is a “0” on the assignment  Second offense is an “F” in the course  The punishment may vary due to the nature of the situation  Should the case be extreme or multiple offenses exist, students can receive an “Unforgiveable F” - permanent on academic transcript BENJAMIN M. STATLER COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES

  22. Academic Performance • D/F Repeat Policy – If a student finds that during their first 60 credit hours that a course grade is less than desirable (D or F), the student can “D/F repeat” that course. The course must be repeated within WVU, and once the repeat occurs, the latest grade is used in GPA calculations. The original grade is not deleted from a student’s permanent record. • If you intend to repeat a course you have earned credit for through AP, you are strongly encouraged to discuss this with an academic advisor. • More information in College Knowledge, page 16 BENJAMIN M. STATLER COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES

  23. Academic Planning • Math Placement and Your Path to Graduation • Students beginning in MATH 155 on track for 4 years to graduation. • Students beginning in MATH 153 on track for 4.5 years to graduation. • Students beginning in MATH 129 on track for 4.5 years to graduation. • Students beginning in MATH 126B on track for 5.5 years to graduation. • Students beginning in MATH 122 on track for 6 years to graduation. *Summer courses are possible to speed your path to graduation. BENJAMIN M. STATLER COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES

  24. Math Course Flow

  25. Academic Planning • Taking the Right Math Class for Success • Understanding and preparedness vs. time in college • Ability to take summer courses to “catch up” (at WVU or another institution) • Opportunities to participate in Co-Ops, Study Abroad, and more • Opportunity to earn a Dual Degree or Minor BENJAMIN M.
