Water availability in Cyprus -Water is considered to be one of the most valuable natural recourses of the country. -Many policies and practices have been developed in order to increase water collection, storage capacity and availability. -Collection of rain water in 180 dams. 3. Agriculture in Cyprus Agricultural sector contributes 2,4% of the national GDP. Total gross output comes up to € 666 millions. Crop production contributes 35% of the total value added in agriculture. Livestock contributes 50% of the total value added in agriculture. 4. Greenhouses

4. Greenhouses Greenhouse crop production is considered to be the most intensive and energy consuming horticultural system. Greenhouses occupy 440 hectares corresponding to 0,5% of the total cultivated area. Main crops cultivated in greenhouses: vegetables and flowers. Greenhouses • Greenhouses infrastructure and equipment varies within the country. • 50% of greenhouses are high and low tunnels • 50% of the greenhouses covered area is equipped with heating systems . • 10% of the greenhouses covered area is equipped with cooling systems . • Hydroponic cultivation systems (estimated 10% of the greenhouses covered area). 5. What’s the goal? The ultimate goal is: • to reduce the energy consumption cost during greenhouse crop production, • minimise the dependence of greenhouse operations to fossil fuels, • secure food chain supply and • optimize producer’s production and income. 6. Purpose of the study The main purpose of the study is to: 1. determine the energy needs of each agricultural sector and, 2. reveal possible and potential ways for energy saving through 1. Combined methods of energy saving 2. Renewable energy sources resulting to Reduce functional cost with the optimum required investment based on the NPV (Net Present Value) of the proposed solutions. 7. Main tasks and deliverables Task 1 Collect data – Mapping of current situation for Floriculture/ Vegetables sectors (existing energy profile for greenhouse production of vegetables and floriculture) and for Animal sector [existing energy profile for livestock farms production such as meat (broilers, pigs, rabbits, edible and hatching eggs (layers and breeders)]. For this purpose, we scheduled field visits both for greenhouses and the animal sector. During the visits, experts will be accompanied by at least one agricultural officer from the relevant sector. Deliverable 1 Determine the energy profile of greenhouses and the animal sector in Cyprus. Task 2- Deliverable 2 Measures for rational energy use and combined methods of energy saving for all relevant sectors of greenhouse and livestock production in Cyprus.
