How will you Define Parent Advocacy? Advocacy – Ongoing support for your child on a particular issue or concern. How will you advocate for you child? – Who will take the lead? – Will you have public or private involvement? – Who will be on your support team? – How often will you advocate?
When to Advocate? • Your child brings an issue or concern to you • Teacher/School Administration recommendation • Changes in your child’s behavior • Parental instinct
How to Communicate? • Establish positive, consistent lines of communication at home • Develop and maintain communication channels within your child's school • Create a network of other parent advocates
How to Advocate For Your Child in High School? Helping your child succeed in high school: • Maximize parent teacher conference time • Encourage Self Advocacy • Teach through Practice • Stay Calm and Collected
How to Advocate For Your Child in High School? Going through the college process: • Consider asking for help from a professional • Combine a college tour with a vacation • Encourage your student to reach out to admission officers • Support your child financially • Move at the pace of your child
