Security: a societal challenge I t concerns the protection of citizens, society and econom y as w ell as Europe's assets, infrastructures and services, its prosperity, political stability and w ell-being. Any m alfunction or disruption, intentional or accidental, can have a detrim ental im pact w ith high associated econom ic or societal costs.
Secure Societies: does industry m atter? The security industry is one of the sectors with highest potential for growth and employment in the EU. In 2011, the sector employed 180,000 people, with an annual turnover of approximately €30 billion. • Overcoming market fragmentation through EU-wide standards • Reducing the gap from research to market by introducing new funding schemes such as Pre- Commercial Procurement
Stakeholder involvem ent Security is an issue that can only be tackled effectively if all stakeholders cooperate. Representatives of the public and private sector need to w ork together across borders. The W ork Program m e is addressed to: - private com panies - industrial corporations - institutional stakeholders
Setting the Research Agenda for 2 0 1 6 and beyond - The NI S Platform ( W G3 ) Main objective of W G3 • contribute to the coordination of the European activities in Research and I nnovation in connection w ith the European Cyber Security strategy and in accordance w ith W G3 ’s scope 10
Scope • address Cyber Security research and innovation in the context of the EU Strategy and Netw ork and I nform ation Security ( NI S) Platform . • identify the key challenges and desired outcom es • prom ote truly m ultidisciplinary research that foster collaboration am ong researchers, industry and policy m akers • serve as a facilitator for the coordination of, and collaboration betw een, research agendas across Europe 11
Scope ( cont.) • exam ine w ays to increase the im pact and com m ercial uptake of research results in the area of secure I CT, including via innovative financial instrum ents and funding m ethods as w ell as new business m odels • provide input to and elicit requirem ents from the w ork of both W G1 ( Risk Managem ent) and W G2 ( I nform ation 12 Exchange)
