  3. The Safety, Trust and Presence Approach (STP): Three Essential Elements when dealing with communication and relationship building For a successful relationship to begin and ultimately thrive across cultures there are three equally important ingredients: Safety, Trust and Presence (STP). All factors are interdependent--each can only happen when the other two are present. This applies to one- on-one relationships or partnerships, work groups, and social engagements. These elements are even more important when people of different backgrounds come together. Filling in the though ts of another’s bias, making incorrect interpretations as a result of coming from your own different reality is an ever-present risk. The STP Approach was developed by Edmée Schalkx, “ Managing "Invisible" Cultural Issues to Create Partnerships that Work ”, a complete chapter has been dedicated in the 2018 Coaching Almanac - , to be published by Springers Publishing end of 2018. The STP Approach is a simple and yet powerful tool for leaders, managers and coaches to use during team process, coaching sessions or just when two people are meeting. In a coaching relationship the Coaching Core Competencies offer a rich coaching structure or framework for achieving STP. Below are the traits for each of the STP elements as I see them. www.ande.nl Culture – The invisible barrier to effective coaching Edmée Schalkx - ICF UK – 8th May 2018 pg. 3
