Is it ‘The arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively’ ? Is it ‘The ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society’ ?

‘2021’ Community Engagement and Participation
5 Points! UK City of Culture Bid Guidance - Community Engagement: • What is the baseline position and how will you encourage and extend engagement and participation in cultural activities amongst different groups and communities in your area? • How will you maximise participation and access through digital technologies, especially for young people? • How will you ensure that the UK City of Culture programme is accessible to all groups in society?
UK City of Culture Bid Guidance - Community Engagement: • How are local people, groups and communities being consulted about the bid? • How will you ensure continued cultural engagement with groups and communities who typically engage less with cultural activities?
Local people often point out ‘trends’ years before they become ‘statistics’…

What are the social networks by which people organise themselves? Who are the caretakers, communicators, and storytellers of Renfrewshire’s culture?
1. What is ‘2021’? What’s it got to do with me? I’m not in Paisley... • Local ‘info - desks’ – points of contact with the ability for those who enquire to leave their ‘fingerprint’ on the bid. • Locally planned & organised events delivering the key messages around the bid. • 2021 volunteering campaigns, 2021 funding events and 2021 community sector training calendar etc. • Branding for as many front-line community focused facilities as possible.
2.How can I help?... • Branding ‘Packs’ – commitment from all community organisations and partners to brand output with the ‘bid’ mark . • Sharing of high quality case studies (examples from a wide range of groups – creative and wider community sector). • Signing of an ambassadors’ pledge.
3. Who are the caretakers, communicators, and storytellers of Renfrewshire’s culture? • Ambassadors ‘get - together’ – Community & Third Sector representatives conference. • Paisley 2021 ‘Script’ for local officers and community ambassadors.
4. Social Media Serendipity or Facebook it ‘to death’ • Creative use of social media to develop community engagement to inform the content of the bid. • Develop and promote ‘Paisley 2021 – A Digitally Connected Cultural Community’ .
5. Stop me if you think you've heard this one before... Consultation fatigue… • Seek clear links for engagement on the bid through the poverty agenda, emerging health and social care approaches, digital strategy etc. • 2021 ‘toolkit’ that aids community organisations recognise how they impact, influence and can help support the bid.
6 . Consultation fatigue…Can we have some fun now please?... • Engagement of artists to lead cultural engagement sessions in community settings. • With the Bid team working with artists, organisations, & communities the engagement activities will be less talking more ‘doing’. • Start ‘Doing!’ – Make it part of your culture to talk about the ‘bid’.
