  1. Business and enterprise • The new business formation rate in Croydon is very high, with the area ranking in the top 20% of districts nationally. In 2008, 13.01% of all businesses registered for VAT compared with 13.21% in London South, 13.40% in London and 10.55% nationally. • The 24 month business survival rate in Croydon is very low by national standards, with the district ranking in the bottom 20% of districts nationally. Of all of the VAT registered businesses in 2005, 77.38% were still trading in 2007, compared to 79.67% in London South and 78.29% in London. • The self ‐ employment rate in Croydon is average by national standards, with the district ranking in the middle 20% of districts nationally.
