HISTORY, LEGEND AND NATURE AROUND THE RESORT The Terme di Saturnia is set in one of the peninsula’s loveliest areas: Tuscan Maremma. A timeless place where every rock, leaf and tree tells a three thousand year-old story. Strolling along the pathways that weave their way through the countryside, between the waterfalls and hot water and ethereal vapors, historical traces can still be made out. Striking Etruscan necropolises, refined Roman villas, mysterious medieval castles. A location enhanced by its unique thermal water which can bestow well-being of the body and mind on anyone in search of its benefits. SATURNIA Saturnia is a tiny but pretty stone hilltop village, it was an important merchant town on the ancient via Clodia trade route, that connected Rome with the colonies in Etruria, the Etruscan areas that the Roman Empire had conquered. There are still portions of the old protective walls that once encircled the town, along with four gateways, the best preserved of which is the Porta Romana. MONTEMERANO Set on a hill of age-old olive trees, this village is distinguished by a typical medieval centre. The oldest part of the settlement, the castle, is dominated by a square keep and a collection of small piazzas, alleyways and houses with the signs of ancient splendor still intact and remains of frescoes and façade decorations. Near one of the gates to the wall, is set the church of St. Giorgio. Restored between the XIV and XV centuries, it contains precious works of art.
PITIGLIANO Pitigliano appears like a fairytale landscape on a promontory of striking wild beauty, bordered by valleys of vibrant green. The Roman aqueduct, its churches and houses seem to have been magicked from the turf cliff hanging over the Lente and Meleta rivers. Pitigliano’s charm is to be appreciated strolling its narrow and picturesque streets, exploring the caves and Etruscan tombs now used as cellars, heading into the Jewish ghetto which made Pitigliano famous as ‘Little Jerusalem’ with the synagogue, the library packed with ancient texts, the cemetery and the unleavened bread oven still active. SOVANA This was an important settlement during the Etruscan period and continued its prominence until the XII century. Since the 1960s restoration work has brought the original charm of this place back to life. An undisputed architectural jewel is its cathedral, built in the IX century and rebuilt between architectural jewel is its cathedral, built in the IX century and rebuilt between the XI and XII centuries. SORANO The picturesque town of Sorano clings to the mountain side of a steep and uneven cliff, made from tuffaceous rock. The historical city centre is characterised by a maze of laneways, courtyards, archways, ashlar portals, outdoor stairways, loggias and cellars dug out from the tuffaceous rock, where grape harvesting activities were performed in the past. Sorano cellars in particular represent one of the most unique peculiarities in Italy.
