  1. CORONAVIRUS COVID-19

  2. ABOUT THE VIRUS We all know about it, but not everyone knows how serious it is: The virus is offjcially called SARS-CoV-2 ● It is suspected that the virus was transmitted by animals ● to humans There are more than 2.4 million cases worldwide ● As of the 20th of April, it has killed over 165,000 people ● In latin, corona means ‘halo’. It’s called the coronavirus because the surface of the virus has projections which look like halos under a powerful microscope

  3. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BACTERIA AND VIRUSES Maybe you’ve learned about it in Biology, but viruses and bacteria ARE NOT the same: ● A virus is a lot smaller than bacteria ● Bacteria can live on its own, but a virus has to infect an organism to live ● Some bacteria are good, but a large number of viruses are harmful

  4. WHY IS THE COVID-19 SO DANGEROUS? There are reasons why the coronavirus is so worrying: ● Since viruses are difgerent from bacteria, antibiotics will not work against viruses ● Current antiviral drugs do not work against it ● It is HIGHLY contagious ● A vaccine, which can provide people with immunity, still hasn’t been developed yet ● Many people lack the proper hygienic practices, causing the virus to spread very quickly

  5. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? It is important to know the symptoms of the disease to avoid people that exhibit them: ● Fever ● Continuous dry coughing ● Shortness of breath ● Chest pains ● Diarrhea (sometimes)

  6. A VIDEO EXPLAINING WHAT HAPPENS TO THE BODY DURING A CORONAVIRUS INFECTION:

  7. HERE IS ANOTHER VIDEO:

  8. HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED? If you do think you might have the virus, then Evolution you should definitely and immediately get it checked: ● Weak a mask and avoid spreading the virus further ● Go to a doctor ● Bring up any recent travels or who you had close contact with ● Saliva, nose, and throat swabs may be taken for testing

  9. PERSONAL HYGIENE TIPS! WEAR SURGICAL MASKS The most obvious way everyone is already protecting themselves from the virus is by wearing a face mask: ● Face masks on sale have varying degrees of quality ● If you can, make sure to buy masks that have at least three layers ○ An outer fluid-repelling layer, a middle layer as a barrier to germs, and an inner moisture-absorbing layer ● However, any mask is better than no mask ● But NEVER REUSE a face mask

  10. PERSONAL HYGIENE TIPS! WEAR SURGICAL MASKS When you buy face masks, check that it is has high percentages values for PFE and VFE PFE stands for Particulate Filtration Effjciency and VFE stands for Viral Filtration Effjciency. A high percentage for PFE and VFE means a high proportion of particulates such as germs, viruses and dust are filtered, preventing them from being breathed into our bodies.

  11. A SHORT INFORMATIVE VIDEO ON HOW TO PROPERLY WEAR A MASK:

  12. PERSONAL HYGIENE TIPS! ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS Make sure that you wash your hands before eating or touching any entrances to your body ● Soap doesn’t actually kill viruses and germs, but they do help massively in washing them ofg your hands ● When you get home, the first thing you should do is wash your hands to prevent spreading the virus to your household objects

  13. AN INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO ON WASHING YOUR HANDS PROPERLY:

  14. PERSONAL HYGIENE TIPS! USE ALCOHOL HAND RUBS If you are outside, and can’t access soap or a sink: Use an alcohol-based hand rub ● Rub your hands like you would wash your hands with soap ● Make sure the alcohol rubs you use contain at least 60% ● alcohol, otherwise they can’t kill all the viruses But remember, alcohol is FLAMMABLE, so make sure to stay ● away from any fire, accidents have happened before

  15. PERSONAL HYGIENE TIPS! CLOSE THE TOILET LID WHEN FLUSHING Flushing the toilet can cause 80,000 droplets of water to stay suspended a metre in the air for an hour The toilets could potentially be contaminated with the virus ● or other germs, especially public toilets When flushing, water droplets could stick to your clothes, ● and you could spread the virus unknowingly Make sure to close the lid before flushing to avoid this ●

  16. PERSONAL HYGIENE TIPS! MAINTAINING DISTANCE When someone sneezes or coughs, small droplets of liquid may be sprayed out, which may contain the virus. Large droplets can travel up to 2 metres , small droplets can ● even travel up to 8 metres When out and about, try to maintain a distance between ● yourself and others. Some cases of the virus are asymptomatic, so even if a ● person looks healthy, they may already carry the virus

  17. A QUICK VIDEO SUMMARY OF THE LAST SLIDE:

  18. PERSONAL HYGIENE TIPS! DISINFECTING AND CLEANING If you have been to a crowded area or to places that may have a risk of contracting the virus: Make sure to disinfect your items upon returning home ● using alcoholic wet wipes, including jewellery, phones, watches and glasses. Take ofg your shoes before entering your house and you can ● spray the bottom of your shoes with diluted bleach (1:99) Wash your clothes with bleach and you can take a shower ● to avoid spreading the virus

  21. ALCOHOLIC HAND SANITISERS Alcoholic hand rubs are in shortage at the moment, even if you cannot make your own hand sanitiser, knowing how they are made may come in handy for your own knowledge. CHEMICALS/REAGENTS USED: - Ethanol (96%) or Isopropyl Alcohol (99.8%) - Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) - Glycerol (98%) - Sterile water (boiled and allowed to cool, or distilled)

  22. All the chemicals are mixed in such a way that the final alcohol rub solution has at least 60% alcohol in them. Remember, only hand sanitisers that have over 60% alcohol in them can kill the virus! If you are keen to learn the exact process click here for the exact World Health Organisation Guidelines DO NOT TRY TO MAKE YOUR OWN HAND SANITISER AT HOME WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND DANGERS OF THE PROCEDURE. SOME OF THE CHEMICALS INVOLVED ARE FLAMMABLE AND POTENTIALLY BE DANGEROUS!

  23. IMPORTANT NOTE IF YOU DO HAVE ALCOHOLIC HAND RUBS AVAILABLE, DON’T ONLY RELY ON IT, MAKE SURE TO KEEP WASHING YOUR HANDS AS THEY SHOULD BE USED TOGETHER TO MINIMISE THE CHANCES OF CONTRACTING THE VIRUS!
