  2. Asthma • Certain “triggers” can cause the bronchial tubes to narrow, obstructing breathing. Have the athlete breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. It is often better to sit up than lie down. You may need to call an ambulance if it does not get better. DO NOT SHARE MEDICATION!!!!!

  3. Asthma triggers

  4. Appendicitis • Inflammation of the appendix, it can rupture and cause death if not removed.

  5. Gastroenteritis • This is food poisoning, usually caused by E. coli. • Signs and symptoms include abdominal pain, tiredness, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and fever.

  6. Indigestion • This is also known as heartburn. It occurs by eating food that is difficult to digest and excess acid may go up into the esophagus.

  7. Diabetes • With this disease, the body does not secrete insulin sufficiently. • Hyperglycemia is when blood sugar levels are too high. • Hypoglycemia is when blood sugar levels are too low.

  8. Diabetic Coma • Occurs when there is not enough insulin to control the amount of sugar in the blood. • Signs and symptoms include thirst, abdominal pain, nausea, confusion, and a sweet smelling breath. • This is life threatening and the patient MUST go to the ER!!!!

  9. Insulin Shock • This is due to too much insulin in the blood. • Signs and symptoms include feeling lightheaded, weak, ashen skin, rapid pulse, and the person appears intoxicated. • To treat: give sugar!

  10. Blood pressure issues • Hypertension is high blood pressure, usually defined as greater than 140/90 (130/80?). • Hypotension is low blood pressure. There are no numbers for this; too low means that you are passing out.

  11. Anemia • This is the lack of red blood cells necessary to provide oxygen to body tissues.

  12. Iron-deficiency Anemia • This is having not having enough iron for the red blood cells to carry oxygen. • Signs and symptoms include pale skin, fatigue, and dizziness.

  13. Sickle Cell Anemia • This occurs when red blood cells look like sickles and can’t carry enough oxygen. • The cells stick together and clog capillaries and can cause a lot of pain, and in some cases, even death.

  14. Hemophilia • This is a blood disorder that delays blood clotting which can lead to difficulty in controlling bleeding with minor injuries. • It occurs in males.

  15. Epilepsy • This is a disorder marked by disturbed electrical rhythms in the central nervous system.

  16. Viral Communicable Diseases

  17. Mumps • Signs and symptoms include fatigue, headache, swelling of the glands below and in front of the ears, and difficulty swallowing

  18. Chicken Pox • Signs and symptoms include a polka dot body rash, fever, fatigue, itching, and a headache. It is VERY contagious, but there is now a vaccine available.

  19. Measles • Signs and symptoms include a cough, high fever, rash, fatigue, eyes are sensitive to light, and a headache. You can prevent this through vaccination.

  20. German Measles • Signs and symptoms include a rash that covers the body within a day, pain, and itching. You can prevent this through vaccination.

  21. Aseptic Meningitis • Signs and symptoms include a headache, stiff neck, fever, and vision problems. This is very serious and CAN CAUSE DEATH!!!!!!

  22. Skin Infections

  23. Herpes • The cold sore kind has signs and symptoms of a weeping open blister with a red base and yellow crust, swollen glands, and a fever. • Transferred through skin to skin contact, which is especially bad for wrestlers and rugby players.

  24. Impetigo • Caused by a staphylococcus or streptococcus infection. • Signs and symptoms include blisters that break open and get a crusted yellow exterior. • NEED ANTIBIOTICS!!!!

  25. Folliculitis • This is an inflammation of the hair follicle. • It may look like a pus filled sore. • NEED ANTIBIOTICS!!!!

  26. Furuncle • Also known as a boil. • It is a bacterial infection in a skin gland. • Signs and symptoms include a bright red area with a hard central core that is painful to touch and it may look like a large pimple. • DO NOT SQUEEZE!!!!

  27. Blood-Borne Conditions

  28. HIV/AIDS • This is transferred through bodily fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk. • It would take about 1 gallon of tears or saliva to transfer the disease.

  29. HBV • Hepatitis B is an infection to the liver. • It is transmitted through contact with blood, even dried blood! • Jaundice is likely to occur (yellowing of the skin and eyes). • Can be prevented through a vaccine.

  31. Respiratory Conditions

  32. Common Cold • Signs and symptoms include a sore throat, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, loss of voice, and fatigue. • Prevention includes a good diet, washing your hands, and avoiding those who have a cold.

  33. Influenza • Signs and symptoms include a headache, muscle aches, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, chills, and a fever. • Can be prevented with a flu shot (sometimes) and avoiding those with the flu.

  34. Bronchitis • This is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes caused by an infection or an allergy. • Signs and symptoms include a fever, sore throat, fatigue, chills, a deep cough and wheezing.

  35. Laryngitis • This is inflammation of the larynx. • Signs and symptoms include a sore throat and no voice. • DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!
