Chilliwack School District - Career Programs Umbrella Gr. 9 -12 ITA YOUTH Programs: EXPLORE: Career Ed & Trades Sampler • Applied Design, Skills & A.D.S.T. • Explore Trades Skills Technology Courses: TRAIN: • Formerly ACE – IT • Business Education (courses offered within the high school • Home Economics environment in partnership with the Career Education WEX Programs: universities.) Examples below: • Information Technology • WELDING Courses: • WEX 12 A • Technology Education • COOK TRAINING • Career Ed Life • WEX 12 B • CARPENTRY There are over 66 course offerings that fall • Career Ed Connections • HAIR DRESSING under the ADST heading. • PLUMBING • CAPSTONE Project • ELECTRICAL Dual Credit: • HEAVY DUTY MECHANIC These courses are a partnership • RCP Programs with UFV between our District & UFV. Dual credit courses are offered to our grade 12 WORK: students who would like to pursue • Formerly SSA careers in the following fields: • Community Support Worker (Students who are working in an apprenticeship trade outside of school • Health & Human Services hours.)
Department Restructuring & Initiatives: • Created an ADST & Career education K- 12 curriculum position. • Aligned the Career Department with Curriculum • Created a career leadership team. • Reformatting of all Career Program documents. • Assigned our WEX facilitators to our Secondary schools. • Intentionally expanded our community partnership with the University of the Fraser Valley. • We have supported professional development for our Career Education teachers at Secondary. • Worked alongside our neighboring school districts.
Work Experience Programs • Chilliwack has supported the Ministry Authorized Work Experience program for over 20 years. • Students earn up to 8 credits towards Graduation. • Currently we have nearly 500 students enrolled • Students at over 1200 placements. • A highlight for 2019 is the Junior Forest Service program which allowed students an opportunity to be engaged with training through BC Wildfire Service. Students earned certificates including First Aid, Fire suppression & Bear aware – Wilderness survival.
ITA Youth Programs • Currently we have 52 enrolled in a Youth Train in Trades program. • Have 60 students in trades outside of school. • We had 20 students compete in the Regional Skills Competition on March 7 th at UFV. • 9 of our competitors will now move on to Provincials at Tradex April 17 th . • Our District Gr.8’ s participated in Try a Trade activities put on by Skills BC. • Our secondary schools continue to expand the Youth Train in Trades programs offered with new programs beginning in the Fall – Including Automotive service tech & Residential Construction.
Elementary A.D.S.T. – Planting early seeds… • Professional development opportunities. • Working alongside educators • Create resources and materials that link the new curriculum to core content. • Students have had the opportunity to explore activities in Woodworking, Electronics, Sewing & Textiles, just to name a few.
Middle School A.D.S.T – Watching them grow… • Each Middle School is offering a variety of different electives • Integrated throughout all curriculum areas. • Teachers are making connections • The Entrepreneur Fairs happening all over the district also engage our students in cross curricular learning.
