The Coalition Against Trafficking in Women Founded in 1988, CATW is the world ’ s first NGO, to fight human trafficking internationally and holds Special Consultative Status with the UN ’ s CATW ECOSOC. CATW recognizes human trafficking as a form of gender violence and a severe violation of human rights.
On July 8, 2010, the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women, Prostitution Research and Education (PRE) and 85 co-sponsoring organizations held a picket line protest in front of the corporate office of Craigslist, protesting their “ adult services ” section which facilitates sex trafficking.
The Nordic Model In 1999 Sweden enacted laws that required the arrest and prosecution of prostitution buyers. Sweden stopped arresting “ prostitutes ” and initiated an educational campaign against demand .
Sweden ’ s approach In 5 years, the number of Swedish women in prostitution declined by 40%. Today, while each year 17,000 women are trafficked into Finland, in Sweden, less than 400 are.
