  2. Introduction What we are doing to improve the care of patients at Stafford and Cannock Chase Hospitals with regards to • Nutrition – including food and drink • Mixed sex accommodation

  3. Food Ensuring that all patients have: • Enough to eat • A choice of foods to suit all diets and appetites – Dieticians – Range of menus – In right sort of packaging/containers • Help with eating if needed – Red tray system – Hostesses – Volunteers/ Age UK

  4. Drink Ensuring that all patients have: • Enough to drink • Right sort of fluids • In right sort of containers • Within reach • Help with drinking if needed

  5. How do we check this is happening? • Comfort rounds – Fluid balance charts – Fluid balance audits • Nutrition is one element of our Quality Framework (based on Essence of Care 2010) • Eating and drinking benchmarking completed in June across all 18 wards

Who else is checking? • Governors - unannounced visits • Staffordshire LINk – enter and view • Care Quality Commission - unannounced visits – In May 2011 CQC carried out an unannounced visit to Cannock Chase Hospital to review Dignity and Nutrition for older people. They reported “that Cannock Hospital was meeting this essential standard”

  8. Mixed Sex Accommodation • Declared non compliance on 1 April with aim to be compliant by 31 August • Areas where we had most issues with compliance: – Acute Medical Unit – Endoscopy – Surgical Assessment Unit – Observation area of A&E • Breaches every month including June • Work undertaken to address all outstanding issues • Will be reporting to Trust Board on 28 July that we now compliant – seeking approval to declare compliance
