Essentials for passing the exam • Do the reading. • The BGA recommended study guides are • ‘ Bronze and Beyond ‘, which is periodically updated by the experienced gliding instructor author. • ‘Laws and Rules’ • ‘Air Law Aeronautical Knowledge’ (published 2016), which covers the ANO 2016, SERA and other EASA requirements. • Read the legend on a Recent 1:500,000 Southern England and Wales chart.

  6. Lectures • Use the lectures to help clear any knowledge gaps or misunderstandings. Do the reading first if possible.

  7. On-line Tests • Try some of the on-line tests to check you have learnt the correct areas.

  8. Exam • To take the exam itself, you will need: – Pencil – Rubber – Recent 1:500,000 Southern England and Wales chart – Permanent pen for marking up chart (black or blue would be best) – Solvent to erase chart mark-up (e.g. meths) – Aviation chart ruler (with kilometre and nautical mile scales) – Protractor (aviation) – Calculator (not essential) – Bronze Claim Form (to be signed after successfully passing the exam!) – https://members.gliding.co.uk/library/pilots/bronze- endorsement-application-form/

  9. Exam • Don’t panic – 75% correct answers for a pass in each section. – Multiple choice

Topics • Human performance and limitations • Air Law and Recommended Practices • Airmanship • Principles of flight 1 -lift, drag and performance • Principles of Flight 2 -glider design and stability • Navigation 1 -map reading and airspace • Navigation 2 – flying cross country • Instrumentation and RT procedures • Meteorology 1 - macro weather systems • Meteorology 2 - micro weather systems

  11. Tips • Read the questions fully and carefully. • Remember, a map has a legend. • You will have a map with you during the exam.
