Family Program Veterans, New Family Program Members, and those attending who are not part of Family Program For the Veterans Family Program Parents who have heard me do Parent Café’s before, today will be a little different This presentation is a follow-on from our Common Ground Listening Session last year where you identified issues in our community that were a concern for you. Substance Abuse As a result of that session we formed a Parish team to research and address some part of the Substance Abuse Issue Kris Bachman, Mike Burke, Jason and Jennie Gaurkee, Robin Gleason, Ann Harvieux, John and Pat Lonsdale, Ken and Vicki Meske, Gwen Mosier, and Jamee Stanley
Why are we doing this session today? As I said, last year’s Listening S ession indicated that S ubstance Abuse IS a key concern for you One key barrier to stopping S ubstance Abuse is breaking down the S tigma that surrounds it. We hope today’s session and sessions to follow WILL BEGIN to break down that S tigma so that we don’ t think of the addicted as “ BAD” people… .. Substance abuse is affects people from all walks of life
Today’s speakers Brad S chimel – Family Program Parent Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge with extensive experience in dealing with the drug issue as Waukesha County DA and Wisconsin Attorney General Brad will talk about: The magnitude of the epidemic The myths/ stigma of substance abuse What we should do as parents Kris Bachman – Parish member and mother of 3 Kris tells her younger sister, Erika’s, story of how casual opioid use in high school turned into a full blown heroin addiction, and her advice to parents about substance abuse.
