Biodiversity – the case of Alpro Greet Vanderheyden Sr. Sustainability Manager @ Alpro 29/06/2020
From “comparing to” to “One Planet Products”
Pilot project kicked-off in 2018 with WWF
Biodiversity in almond cultivation Introduction: o GLOBIO framework: measures MSA (Mean Species Abundance of natural species) using pressure factors land use, CO2, nitrogen and water Results: o Organic, not irrigated: 70% loss of natural reference o Intensive, irrigated: 90% of loss of natural reference o Per liter of drink produced, the biodiversity footprint of organic is higher, as more land required for same yield o Solutions to increase biodiversity: Increase yield in organic farming without addditional effects on biodiversity Reduce impact of more intensive farms with focus on undergrowth management
Land use in Mediterranean area
Pilot zone: Rio Canaleta in Spain
Alpro towards “Zero Net Loss biodiversity ”?
Next steps: One Planet roadmaps with 5 almond farmers • Co-build in workshops with farmers • Focus on farmer engagement • Build farm-specific roadmaps with various measures Certification bee-friendly farms Intercropping with herbs Grazing undergrowth sheep or chickens Reintroduce landscape elements (ponds, hedges) Install nature corridors
Next steps: Restoration surrounding landscapes • Multi-year project with Natuurpunt • Sponsor purchase of 6 ha of valuable land in 2020 • Focus on endangered meadow birds in basin of river Leie • Mid-term objective: improve water retention in area
