BEST MAIN STREET IN THE USA In 2016, Emporia’s Commercial Street won the USA Today’s 10Best Main Street in the USA. Tiis award was given because of the extraordinary hard work local business owners, event planners, and the Emporia Main Street organization has done. Tie honor has been an important part of the Emporia CVB’s marketing campaign over the last year. As day tripper and shopper are a core targeted demographic, this honor paired perfectly with the Emporia brand.
MAGAZINE ADVERTISEMENTS Appropriate magazines in which to advertise were chosen on their targeted demographics. Tie advertisements on this page ran in magazines in the Kansas City and Wichita metro areas and targeted day trippers and shoppers who are primarily women.
Emporia is known for having the largest disc golf tournament in the world and is home of the Dirty Kanza bike race, one of the most extreme cycling races on the globe. While a separate campaign targeted disc golfers and cyclists to train and play in Emporia year round, the CVB also ran a campaign targeting fans and enthusiasts to explore downtown after their events.
TARGETING LOCALS While the majority of the ad buy targeted tourist shoppers and leisure travelers, the Emporia CVB thought it was important to do some marketing to locals. Tiis would help them know about events in the city and allow them to talk about Emporia’s brand through word-of- mouth. A secondary draw to Emporia is the Flint Hills. While marketing the landscape to visitors, the advertisements always tried to remind people of Emporia’s brand and award winning main street.
