Banting Program Objective To provide funding to the very best PDF applicants, both nationally and internationally. These applicants will positively contribute to Canada’s economic, social, and research-based growth . The Fellowship is intended to: 1. Attract and retain top-tier researchers 2. Develop leadership potential 3. Position researchers for future success 3
Value & Distribution • $70,000 per annum for two years (non-renewable) • 70 fellowships are awarded each year • Awards are distributed equally among CIHR, NSERC & SSHRC • Limit on the number of Banting PDFs that can be granted to trainees for tenure aboard removed (previous limit of 25%) 4

Eligibility • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and foreign citizens are eligible • Applicant can apply for an agency-specific postdoctoral award (SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR) and the Banting for the same year • An agency- specific postdoctoral award can’t be terminated to take up a Banting PDF • More important eligibility information may be found at: http://banting.fellowships-bourses.gc.ca/en/app-dem_elig-adm.html 6
Window of Eligibility* Applicants to the 2016 – 17 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program must fulfill or have fulfilled all degree requirements for a PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree • between September 20, 2014 and September 30, 2018 (inclusively), and • before the start date of their award. *The window of eligibility can be extended by a cumulative maximum of two years if the applicant had their career interrupted for allowable reasons (http://banting.fellowships-bourses.gc.ca/en/app-dem_elig-adm.html). 7
Banting Evaluation Criteria 1. Research excellence and leadership in research 2. Quality of the applicant's proposed research program 3. Institutional commitment and demonstrated synergy between applicant and institutional strategic priorities 8
Last Year’s Numbers • 34 LOI packages were submitted • 9 went forward to the full application • 1 was successful: Dr. Fitzsimmons Frey joined the department of Theatre 9
Number of Files to be Selected this Year • The number should be based on excellence and viability as top candidates • We have the capacity to support the development of approximately 6-7 applications • Those applicants who are selected will revise and develop their applications with support from FGS, Faculties, and/or ORUs, etc. 10

The Successful LOI A strong LOI package should demonstrate: 1. The applicant’s excellence as a researcher and as a research leader 2. An innovative and unique research program (emphasizing transformative potential) 3. Synergy between the applicant, the research proposed, the host institution, and opportunities for professional development 12

Common Qualities of Successful Applications • Clear, compelling & detailed proposal demonstrating: o Objectives o Context o Methodology o Significance, originality and potential impact of the research • Feasibility – the project must be feasible within the timeframe of the fellowship, given the resources described, and the described oputputs • Institutional support is demonstrated – e.g., connection to SRP, ongoing research strengths, track record of success in research area, appropriate infrastructure • Institutional support will take multiple, complementary forms as appropriate for research proposed 15
The “ Sparkling G em” Effect • The Banting competition is not for everyone! • Each application must convey something that is truly unique and an opportunity to advance research in new and creative ways. o Creativity/originality o Scholarly merit/rigour (track record & promise) o Social value/ potential impact o Timeliness 16
Additional Considerations From the onset of the application process, applicants and supervisors/host institutions should discuss: • the details of the fellowship appointment • any benefits offered • any financial obligations associated with the appointment • the availability of any research and/or other support • the rights and responsibilities of postdoctoral fellows • any other institution-specific policies that might apply to the Banting Fellow 17
