An Interconnected Solution to the USA’s Water Problems By: Nico Mesyngier, Jack Tatlow, Matt Cioffi and Matt Prevost
Table of Content ● Introduction ● Project Background ● Project Objectives ● Specs Brainstorm ● Evaluation ● References
The internet of things will increase societal productivity through improved communication. ● At&t proposed project ● Incorporate the internet of things ○ The connection of a group of objects to the internet. ● Improve a problem within a car, home, wearable manner
A Large number of Droughts occur in the Western USA ● Serious health, social, and economic impacts ● Drives up food and water prices ● Wildfires ● More drastic as populations grow
The stakeholder and customer needs outline how the problem is going to be addressed. ● Needs to incorporate the internet ● Should be easy to use ● Should be accessible ● Needs to be adaptive ● Regulate water supply ● Regulate water usage
We came up with two ideas to promote water conservation Daily Allocation of Specific Amounts Price Adjustments ● Each location is analyzed for daily ● Changes every 4 hours based off water usage water levels in source ● Allocated daily water amounts based ● Price changes accessible through app on analysis and available amounts ● Vary by machine ● Monitor will show how much is left ● Each home can set maximum prices ● Unnecessary machines can be ● Steeper increase during drought programmed to shut down ● Amounts reset daily
Varying prices was our best idea when examined with respect to our specs Allocating Varying Water Prices Criteria Weight Rating Weighted Rating Weighted (1-5) (1-5) Score (1-5) Score Utilizes IoT 5 5 25 5 25 Easy install 2 2 4 3 6 Accessibility 4 4 16 4 16 User friendly 3 1 3 4 12 Simplicity 3 2 6 3 9 Total 54 68
Regulating water by means of price control would decrease waste and conserve water. ● Conservation is important in times of drought ● Varying prices based on supply ● Consumer use of water is measured ● Information regarding usage/supply is readily available on an app ● Stakeholders ○ Water companies ○ EPA ○ Water customers
Through the use of the internet, information on water consumption and supply become readily available. ● Measure reservoir supply via sonar ● Measure household usage via flowmeter ● Measure individual appliance usage via flowmeter ● Information sent to the internet via wireless broadband receivers ● Smartphone/tablet app that displays water price and usage.
