The First 15 Months: Work Group Accomplishments • Created an ASN mission, vision and values statement on diversity • Increased collection of ASN Member Demographics • Established the ASN-Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program Award • Recruited a volunteer to represent LGBT community interests on the Diversity and Inclusion Work Group • Exhibited at the Student National Medical Association Annual Meeting • Funded 15 participants to attend the NIDDK Network of Minority Health Investigators Annual Workshop

The 2 nd Year: Work Group Accomplishments • Awarded the first ASN-Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program Award • Organized the first Diversity and Inclusion Lunch at Kidney Week 2015 • Hosted a reception at the Student National Medical Association Annual Meeting • Sent a representative to The LGBT Health Workforce Conference • Funded 19 participants to attend the 2016 NIDDK Network of Minority Health Investigators Annual Workshop

The 2 nd Year: Work Group Accomplishments • Awarded the first ASN-Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program Award • Track record of success- Out of the 250 Amos scholars, 23 have focused on kidney health. • Gentzon Hall, MD, PhD, Duke University School of Medicine. • Dr . Hall’s research focuses on novel gene discovery in African Americans with familial focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. • Organized the first Diversity and Inclusion Lunch at Kidney Week 2015 • Over 50 attendees, including early and mid-career nephrologists, and several Kidney STARS and Karen L. Campbell Fellows. • Served as a platform to solicit input and feedback to identify existing gaps in current efforts. • The second annual Diversity and Inclusion Lunch will be held at Kidney Week 2016 and will be expanded to 75 participants.

The 2 nd Year: Work Group Accomplishments • Hosted a reception at the Student National Medical Association Annual Meeting • Dr. Hoover and Dr .Wesson of the Diversity and Inclusion Work Group joined ASN staff at the ASN exhibit booth. • ASN hosted a reception in which students listened to a presentation on careers in nephrology. • 10-15 students signed up for ASN student memberships. • Sent a representative to The LGBT Health Workforce Conference • Dr. Lunn of the Work Group attended the conference to evaluate for a potential ASN exhibit or other involvement. • Preparing the health care workforce to address the health concerns of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities. • Designed for health professionals, educators, and students (pre- health professions, professional schools, and graduate).

The 2 nd Year: Work Group Accomplishments • Funded 20 participants to attend the 2016 NIDDK Network of Minority Health Investigators Annual Workshop • 5 additional awards given in 2016 (15 awarded in 2015). • ASN and NMRI established a direct application process for the travel awards. • Partnership helps ASN promote sponsorship (increasing opportunities for young faculty to get in front of senior leaders).

What’s next? • Developing Mentorship Curriculum • The curriculum will build on an existing CTSA curriculum to help train mentors and mentees. • The curriculum modification will be overseen by the ASN Education Committee and the final version will be hosted on the ASN website. • Tracking and Reporting Performance • The work group will track and evaluate ASN panel demographics from 2012 to the present, along with Member demographics. • These statistics will be used to gauge the success of diversity and inclusion efforts across all areas of the society. • Establishing a Diversity and Inclusion Committee • The work group will be transitioned to a permanent committee under the new ASN strategic plan. • The committee will include some members of the original work group, but will also recruit new members.
