- Trained at Royal Botanic Garden, John Hays McLaren Edinburgh 1846 - 1943 - Hired by wealthy American to be Head Gardener at Rancho San Mateo (10 sq. mi. estate) -1872 immigrates to U.S. - Recommended to Park Commission by Ham Hall to become the first “trained” GGP gardener - hired in1887 as Assistant Superintendent - 1890 Superintendent of Golden Gate Park - 1916, at mandatory retirement age of 70, McLaren is made c. 1910 “Superintendent for life.”
Alvord Lake - Stanyan across from Haight St. William Alvord (1833 - 1904) - merchant, banker, 14th Mayor (1871-1873) Supporter of the development of Golden Gate Park. Artificial “lakelet” financed by Alvord in 1882, improved in 1894.
Alvord Tunnel - 1889 Oldest standing tunnel in Golden Gate Park First poured-in-place concrete construction using rebar technique. Awarded recognition as a National Historic Civil Engineer Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Recently undone major retrofitting.
August, 1888: Park Commission Chairman Hammond suggests the establishment of a zoological garden in Golden Gate Park.
