AIG + Partners Energy +Sustainability Consultancy Capabilities
About Us AIG’s International Energy and Sustainability consultancy arm is capable of offering wide range of consulting services with the necessary knowledge, experience and expertise to complement our historic approach to reduce carbon emissions from new and existing buildings. This sustainable advice includes thermal modelling and a suite of Environmental Assessment techniques, including BREEAM, Code for Sustainable Home assessments, Home Quality Mark ,Wellbeing Assessments and LEED. Our teams are led by experienced engineers and consultants. They are registered Low Carbon Consultants and Energy assessors with CIBSE. We believe in creating the right environment for our clients and this starts in our own office. An environment where we enjoy what we do and are allowed to do it. Our designers are creative and innovative, we want to give them room to thrive and to work proactively and efficiently.
What we Do We offer a wide range of complimentary services to provide our clients with truly holistic solutions, including thermal modelling and environmental assessment tools such as BREEAM and LEED. We believe that we add real value at any time in a project but particularly when we can get involved in projects right from the start, working with architects and design teams to create internal environments that meets the clients expectations in the short and longer term, that are flexible and future proof. We do this by developing pro-active relationships with the teams in which we work, trying to design out the active services, mechanical ventilation, heating and cooling as well as artificial lighting to create truly sustainable buildings. We have experience in all building sectors, particularly mixed use residential, commercial, education and hotel/leisure. Our team have come together from a range of diverse backgrounds - this gives us a breadth of experience and solutions to make sure we find the right one for our clients.
Our Services We are passionate about the 3 E’s – Energy, Environment & Economy Our specialty is in challenging the planning policies and going above and beyond the set policy requirements to meet the energy and sustainability standards for every project. We offer the following Consultancy services to our clients: Thermal Modelling Our specialists use dynamic thermal modelling software to see how your building will perform, before it's even built! Using award winning IES Virtual Environment software we can evaluate: ▪ Thermal comfort Analysis ▪ Energy consumption & CO2 emissions ▪ Overheating (TM59 & TM52) ▪ Passive design strategies ▪ Ventilation strategies ▪ Internal daylight ▪ Solar gain analysis ▪ Glare analysis ▪ Overshadowing ▪ Building fabric choices ▪ Renewable energy feasibility ▪ Building regulations compliance (Part L & EPCs) ▪ BB101 compliance
Our Services Sustainable Design Advice Involving our sustainable design consultants at the very earliest stage in the design process can help ensure that our team can mitigate wherever possible the use of active Building Engineering Solutions in pursuit of the correct internal environments. Our team utilise dynamic thermal modelling to accurately simulate a buildings energy use and carbon emissions. With this tool our consultants can change the building easily, working with the whole design team to see what effect a change in construction may have to the carbon emissions and the internal environmental conditions. Our team use the Planning Policy framework to assist our approach as follows: ▪ Reduce the use of energy ▪ Improve energy efficiency ▪ Reduce heat losses and heat gains through design ▪ Maximise the use natural daylighting ▪ Reduce reliance on mechanical ventilation ▪ Use of Low/Zero Carbon Technologies ▪ Undertake Renewable feasibility studies ▪ Use of non-sustainable resource via low carbon technologies ▪ Optimise energy from fossil fuels through low carbon technology
Our Services Energy Statements Our low carbon consultants can undertake a feasibility study to allow the team to understand any viable low energy solutions, to understand the pros and cons, and to give the client an understanding of costs, both in terms of capital and in the future. This study will consider the energy demand of the development, review the low and zero carbon technologies appropriate to the specific site or development, provide a cost review including life cycle analysis of solutions or proposals and provide information to understand local planning requirements. We can carry out a detailed review of carbon savings and provide information on availability of grants or wider incentives. Energy statements, or energy strategy reports, are a requirement for planning in an increasing number of authorities in London and in the UK. This report is submitted as part of the planning application to demonstrate the carbon reduction that will be achieved in your development.
Our Services Sustainability Statements The Sustainability Statement forms a crucial part of any planning application. With the right approach, a well written sustainability statement can ensure a smooth and successful passage through to approval. This report may take several guises depending on where you are building. Planners may use different terminology like 'Energy Statement', 'Sustainable Design and Construction Checklist' or similar. Whatever the term, the aim of the report is to demonstrate how the developer will address specific local objectives from CO2 emissions and renewable energy targets to environmental issues. This may be achieved with better performing fabric, efficient services, renewable technologies and consideration of wider environmental factors onsite. The statement will generally be prepared at pre-planning stage and accompany your application. It is important to note that planning departments have very different policies - from 'London Plan' guidelines to renewable energy targets set by local councils. The Sustainability statement report will demonstrate how a scheme will address core policies around sustainability, as set by your local authority. We will determine the rules and guidance in a number of ways: 1. View the local authority policy documents online 2. Request pre-planning advice or a 'pre-app' meeting 3. Speak directly to your sustainability officer, if one exists If information is hard to come by, and we are not already familiar with your local requirements we are very happy to speak to your planners to ensure that they will receive what they need. This also ensures that you get an accurate idea of costs and timescales.
Our Services Natural Ventilation Strategy Utilising dynamic thermal modelling enables AIG to see how your building will work before its even built! We use thermal modelling to test if the proposed building form and construction will enable natural ventilation to be utilised. We can include the appropriate internal heat gains from people, lighting and equipment for your building type and test different types of openings to see if thermal comfort can be maintained. If overheating does occur we can assess alternative construction materials, shading devices, opening strategies and even management options to improve the comfort levels in the building. Using thermal modelling software enables us to evaluate the design of natural ventilation, seeing if singled sided, cross or stack ventilation is the most appropriate solution, demonstrating the ventilation rates achieved in each space. We work hard to make a building design work for its future occupants and for our clients, developing practical, cost- effective solutions to achieve successful passive design.
Our Services BREEAM, HQM, Well & Code for Sustainable Homes Assessments Our Sustainability Consultants are accredited BREEAM, Home Quality Mark, Well Standards and Code for Sustainable Homes Assessors with many years' experience achieving tough targets on challenging projects. Our Assessors lead project teams through the assessments, providing in-depth guidance on how to design in credit scoring features to achieve credits and aim to simplify the process for all involved. The earlier we can be involved in a project, the more successful the assessment is and this also minimises the financial burden of achieving an assessment. Our experienced BREEAM Assessors cover all sectors and are also BREEAM Accredited Professionals (AP) which demonstrates their professional specialism in sustainability and environmental design and gains you an extra 3 credits if they are appointed sufficiently early in an assessment. We also provide a number of other services that help securing additional credits and evidence for your BREEAM Assessments including: ■ BREEAM Pre-Assessments ■ Daylight Calculations ■ Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) ■ Energy Statements ■ Dynamic thermal modelling for thermal comfort ■ Low and Zero Carbon Feasibility Reports
